Apropos of the kidnapping of Mr. Lin Treng Yung, son of Mr. Lin Chun Sen, general manager of the Ho Fong S.N. Co., Shanghai, the Chinese Press reports that, in spite of the fact that 818,000 had been paid by the victim's family as ransom, the kidnappers failed to release Mr. Lin, junior. On this account, the victim's father became B much concerned about his sop's fate that he fell sick some time ago and died last week.

Native shipping business in the North is said again to be paralyzed by the civil war, and (according to the Sinanpao) foreign companies are taking advantage of the situд- tion to increase their tonnage in Chinese waters. With the exception of the Wenchow service, Chinese companies are now maintaining only a skeleton North China and Yang- taze service. It is said that there is not a single Chinese-owned vessel on the South China run.
