The general list was quiet and sales at 11.30 o'clock were barely a half-million shares. Closing deals in large blocks raised the total to 980,570 for the half-day session and improved the averages of price levels.

In most of its aspects the list was firm. Oila improved and Standard of New Jersey closed up to : Standard of New York closed up an eighth to 36; Phillipa Petroleum held at 38: but Texas Corp. was off a quarter to 574; and Contin ental Oil was off to 20

Amusements were strong through out the trading. Foxy Film "A" closed up to 32 Paramount Famous Lasky was down an eighth at the closs, which was 671. Warner Bros. closed at 578,

The Dow Jones average for 30 in. dustrials was up 4.44 to 271.33 with U.S. Steal up to 178. Betaleben: Steel up an eighth to 031. Westing house up 1 to 176, General Electric up A to s21. American Can up to 1434 and Du Pont up 1 to 133.

The profits of Whiteaway, Laid- law and Co., Ltd., the drapers and outfitters, have in recent years shown marked fluctuations, gang- ing from £169,507 for 1923-24 to £91,158 for 1925-29.

For the twelve months to February 28 last earnings were virtually un- changed, the figure amounting to £91,296. The evailable balance is, however, lower by £10,212, owing to the smaller sum brought into the accounts, and the dividend of 8 per cent., tax free, compares with 10 per cent. for the previous year. and 15 per cent. för 1926-27 and 1827-28, and is the lowest since 1929-23, when the distribution was 7 per cent.

A year ago the balance-sheet showed shares in Whiteaway, Laid: law Java Stores, Ltd., at £62,820, the valuation being on a cost bagis. This holding now figures 240,685, at cost less reserve, but £7,170 is owing" on current ac- count from the subsidiary.
