New York, May 10-As a result of yesterday's announcement of an other weekly decline in brokers loans, the opening of the market to-day on the New York Stock

Exchange was Erm, anys the daily review of the Dow Jones Financial Nows Agency,

Westinghouse at the opening ad vanced, the first sale being at 178]. At the lose Westinghouse was at -178.

The oils were steady, with Stand ard Oil of New Jersey opening at mi cad closing at 704. up an eighth from yesterday. Standard of New York closed at 303, up 1. Contin. ental Oil was up half a point to 991 at the close.

The Steel Position.

U.S. Steel opened at 173 and closed at 171. off .. Bethlehem's close showed a gain of a quarter.

Coppers were firm at the opening, with Anaconda opening at 61. To- wards the close, coppers cased of and Anaconda closed at 60%, up an eighth. Calumet & Heela likewise closed up an eighth to 201. Nevada Consolidated held at 21...

Under the leadership of the rails and specialities, the market grew firmer before the close, with steels showing improvement and rails gaining one to three points. with the exception of Western Pacific. The Dow Jones average for 20 rails was up 53 to 14432 New York Central closed up to 1764; Pen- neylvania was up half a point to 78; Erie gained 14 to close at 40 B. & O. was up to 1154; and Rock Island declined 1 to 113.

Tobaccos advanced, with Ameri- can Tobacco "B" up six points to close of 259): Liggett & Myers "B" up two points to 1092; and Reynolds Bun an eighth to 334, The so-called "bot weather issues" also became firmer

Activity in Utilities. Several of the utilities advanced with fair activity, although the trading was generally dull, and the Dow Jones average for 20 utilities was up .10 to 102.38. Electric Bond & Share moved 1 to close at 1043 American Tul, & Tel, held at 947 and I. T. & T. at 54. Colum- bia Gas was off at eighth of 801, and Standard Gas was up 1 to 1173.

The Dow Jones average for 30 industrials was up 1.16 to 271.52. General Electric was up an eighth to 831 General Motors was up to 48; Allied Chemical was off to 3104; and Du Pont was up half a paint to 129.

Sales for the day were light. amounting to 2,034,800 shares, Call

nry remained at 3 per cent.
