Professor Charles Maurain, doyen of the Faculty of Science of Paris, is at present engaged in the study, of wind resistance on railroad trains with the object of increasing speed and decreasing coal consumption The models he has made are de- signed after the manner of stream- Thied racing autos and it is con- sidered as likely that his report wit induce the railroad companies to construct their newest engines after this pattern.

The French engineers believe that from the North River region. locomotive designs must be even revolutionary if fullest economy is to be achieved. In other words, they recommend that railway engines of the future should be pointed like a newly sharpened pencil. Professor Maurain general- ly agrees with this. He has tabu- dated a vast array of figures result. ing from his years of experiments, and his conclusive belief is that locomotives designed on these lines and run on smooth roads should effect an economy in power con- sumption of about 33 per cent. in express trains and perhaps more.
