QUIET WEEK PRECEDES HOLIDAY.
REPLIES TO READERS' QUESTIONS,
(By "KCFAS.")
The share-market during the past week showed little signs of activity,
stocks. I advise you to sell and get in again later, when a drop is haund to occur. At the price at which you purchased Raubs there is a nice profit to show, Seize it. Your last question has heen answered through the post, na desired.
THANKFUL -There is no pros. pect that I can see of any advance in stacks 1 to 4. As regards No. B, there are quite a number of inquiries in the market, and shares might go up a little more, Same remarks apply to No. 6. Keep off No. 7. You can make a nice little profit out of No. § il you can lock up for six months.

Owing to the holidays and to, the small volume of business which passed during the week, no detailed review of the market is made.
Answers to Correspondents,
Every The main difficulty, it was reckoned, would be to follow the fight of the ball when it went high into the air, One of the players said it could be followed without any straining of the eyes at, all.
A crowd estimated at about 5,000 people watched the game, and in eluded in these were the Mayer of the Mansfield, the Bishop of Diocese: Lord Savile, and repre- sentatives of the Arsenal, Sheffield Wednesday, Notts County, Lincoln City, Grimsby Town, and Rother- ham United.
The rules of the Football Associa- tion and the various competitions do not prohibit games by artificial light, but tournament and cup matebes could not be played without official sanction. The suggestion that London combination matches. might provide a hig attraction in the evenings for those who cannot attend games in the day-time has met with some approval. A nove in the matter by London clubs may be made in the near future.
NANKING EDUCATES
THE MASSES.
BIG STRIDES IN ONE YEAR.
[UNITED PRESS]
Of the ignorant und illiterate who formerly constituted about 80 per cent. of Nanking's 350,000 popu lation, at least 7,500 adults have been enabled to read and write in the past year as the result of an intensive educational movement enducted by the City Educational Bureau.
week in this column Kufan" replies to correspondents who may have questions to put regarding the prospects of any stock quoted in Hong Kong, Shang- Lai or Singapore. Questions re- gading principles, practice, and eustom can also be dealt with,
Correspondents are asked to ad- "Kalan," dress their queries to care of the Editor of this paper, and to give their names and ad- dresses.
It is desirable that "numune de plume be also included, in order that readers can pick out the answers intended for them.
Every effort will he made to give as full and detailed a reply as pos- sille, but no responsibility what ever is admitted by the writer in so doing,
Those who have written for in formation last week will and answers to their queries below: INTERESTED-The general opinion in the market, as far as I have been able to ascertain, is that practically all Hong Kong stocks are a bit on the high side, but I do not advise you to sell your holdings as I feel that even this high price will be maintained in good stocks, and I look upon your holdings as gilt-edged. There is a possibility of the shares going down lightly during the summer, so the least you can do is to wait until the dividend is paid and write me again if you feel you want to sell at any time.
A three-day campaign is conduct- ed at intervals to arouse the in terest of the literate people in the city. It is participated in by all the schoola and police force. The en tire city is divided into numerous arctions each of which is taken care of by one group of workern. Soap- box speeches are given along the streets, in vacant lots and in the ten shops, the last being popular places of rendezvous among the less | fortunate of Nanking's population. In many instances, demonstra- tions and stunts are given "along with the speeches. It is not un common during these campaigns to see boys of 11 or 12 years of age standing on top of tables telling A group of peddlers, ricksha pullers and labourers the importance of education. Impressive parades, illustrated posters and plays are some of the other feasures of the campaign. Movie ada. are also
tilized in the propaganda.
Immediately after the campaign, nass education schools are opened i in the various localities of the city. Three such "campaigns have taken' place in the last twelve months, The first campaign resulted in the opening of 48 schools with a total enrollment of 2.300. students; the second; 50 schools with 2,500 stud- ents; and the third, 50 schools with 3,000 students. At this rate, it is hoped that illiteracy in Nanking will be reduced to nil in two or three decades.
Besides there mass education- .schools, 1 public reading rooms, have been established throughout the city. It is estimated that an average of 12,000 persons get the henefit of thes reading rooms in a month. In order to give an elemen- tary education, a bit of vocational training besides some knowledge of domestic science, the Educational Bureau has opened four supplemen- tary schools for these married women who had never had a chance of going to school before. There' are also evening schools for shop clerks and factory workers.
Other forms of educational work in the city consist of educational tea shops, swimming pool, a museum of science, a.museum of his. tory, an art gallery, and public lecture groups.
YOUNG MAN-Do nothing just now, as the market is on the high side.
WONDER-If you are not in any urgent need of ready unsh held on to your shares, as I agree with you that there is a distinct chance: of both stacks going up. but I do not anticipate any sudden rise, weither do expect the rise to be very hig. Watch the market, closely.
not good, owing to heing over- inflated. I would advise you to wait six weeks or so before doing anything. as the market may weaken somewhat by that time.
FAITH IN BRITISH BUSINESS.
CITY REMAINS OPTIMISTIC.
Despite the present hard times faith in the future of British busi- Dess stands at a high level in the City, especially among houses on the Stock Exchange and in the commodity markets.
Firms whose business has been brought practically to a standsti!!
the general depression of the past few months are reducing over- head. costs without cutting down their staffs.
The head of a brokerage arm said:-
stafi
We are carrying our throughout the depression, which we regard as temporary. Every member of our staff is essential in normal times, and we do not intend to let them out now.
Although there is little or no business we must carry on as best
we can until it is over."
An offeinl of the Stock Exchangḥ Clerks' Provident Fund stated that there are very few positions open, Those seeking them do not include many of the older and more experi- enced office-workers.
In one firm of four partners, two shared profits. Each of the other two drew a salary of £3,000 a year. En 1929 the profits were £5,000, This year they were £300, Buth salaried directors agreed to forge their salaries to become profit-shar ing partners. The full staff was kept on.
Conditions in the various com- modity houses are similar to those of the Stock Exchange.
In the grain trade the optimism felt in other sections of the city is less pronounced.
The City of London Corporation has sent a donation of £250 in response to the appeal which Mrs. Stanley Baldwin is making, in con junction with the National Birth- day Trust Fund, to provide mater- nity hospitals and other institu- tions with anathetics for mothers. The Court of Common, Council, be- fore reaching its decision, invited Mrs. Baldwin to depute a repre- sentative to outline the purpose of her campaign, but she decided her- self to answer the summons of the City Fathers. and addressed a com-
