It is understood that the books were not published in Hong Kong, but that a large quantity had been flowing into the Colony from neigh bouring ports. Over twenty book atores were raided and in each were found some of the offensive

volumes.

The books are being officially translated, and it is quite possible that some charges will be brought by the authorities against the offending stores in connection with the sale of these books.

Mr. Lindsell, (the Magistrate): He was really employed by this man to do this?

D.S. Clark: Yes. He was pro- mised 82 for it. It appears that he has already enticed three other children away. A FOUR-LEGGED COLD- MINE.

GIB MAKES FORTUNE FOR VILLAGE.

This is the story of The Village That Leaves On A Racehorse,

The horse is Gib, the famous 'chaser, who was bought for £15, and has won eight races off the reel, the horse who Bashed like a meteor, across a corner of the rac ing wärld.

When Mr. Alfred Bendon, the London stockbroker, brought Gib to Park House stables at Cholderton. he began the "Once upon a time of a Wiltshire fairy tale, and they are still living the happy ever after."

A Sweet Dream?

31

A four-legged gold mine came to Cholderton, and the 100-odd inhabi- tants are still pinching each other To make certain that they are awake.

The population are living, loving, and dying by Gib. They marry on him, propose on him, furnish houses on him, swear by him, quote hin, set the time by him-worship him I' I entered the Bundy Arms, the tiny thatched inn of the tiny thatch- ed hamlet, writes a correspondent of the Sunday. Express.

The population of Cholderton raised his tankard, equinted amiably inaide, and then, with the precise languor, of the trained beer drinker, allowed the creamy brown foam to trickle daintily down his throat,..

Down, clanged the tankard on the wood of the bar, and the popula tion wiped his moustache, slapped his thigh, winked, and remarked.

"Oil There be folks who don't 'old with 'osses, and folks you can't 'old from. "'orses-like, but I saya make bay while the sun shines, and so long as Gib lad be in Cholder- ton, there be oil"

And Mr. Bundy, the Cholderton Circe, and jovial mine-hostess of the Bundy Arms, laughed and laughed, and her merry eyes twinkled.

A

At the stables a trim maidservant showed me, where Gib, wis. young man in the road crossed over to tell me that he had backed the animal all eight times, and was buying a bike ! ||

Gib was in. Although every time be sneezes all Cholderton takes a mustard bath, he is not conceited. He is the most gratuitously ugly and clever horse I have ever met, but his popularity is weighing on hira.

"Last time out I won three new bedspreads and a day at the sea- side for two chaps in the village," he neighed, and I am told & friend of mine there wdbts piano"

He whinnied meditatively.
