ADMIRAL SUED,"

PEMBERTON BILLING LOSES A CASE.

A case which was stated to have arisen out of an eve of the poll meeting at the last general election was heard at Hertfordshire Assizes, at Hertford last month, when Mr. Noel Pemberton Billing sued Ad. miral M. F. Sueter for alleged slander.".

Mr. Pemberton Billing, who stood as Independent candidate for the Hertford Division, was defeated by Admiral Sueter, Conservative.

Mr. Pemberton Billing, who con- ducted his own case, said that Ad- miral Sueter, at meetings on the night before the poll, uttered these

words:-

Pemberton Billing comes down here and asks you to vote for him. I was Pemberton Billing's commanding officer, during the war. I know why Pemberton Billing left the service, and if you knew what I know you would not vote for him.

Mr. Pemberton Billing said thas

With high and harsh words ring- ing in the ears of committer mem- iers, the Senate Judiciary Com- inittee's famous "lobbyist hearings" adjourned to-day.

U.S. REPRESENTATIVES AND THE PRESS.

DECISION TO DISOBEY LONG STANDING RULE.

Washington. April. S. restriction on the "press was. un- earthed to-day when House leaders discovered the existence of a par- liamentary rule forbidding the giv. ing of publicity to proceedings of a conference committee.

ILW

This was construed as putting up a barrier against the decision to make public the decision on each item as work was concluded.

Representative John N. Garner of Texas, however, chose to dis regard this long-buried rule. He declare that ho would continue to reveal all doings of the conference committeo on the tariff, meeting the reporters. each day,

Indications were that his col. leagues approved of his attitude and, would take action against him, since all concerned were an- xious to test the public reaction to the various decisions of the con- ferees on this important measure.

Although 50 rates have now been changed, many important schedules remain for consideration, and none of the Senators and Representa- lives is anxious to court trouble at the polls by seeming to disregard, Mr. Justice Rowlatt: Admiral | the public's interest. Sent to Germany,

Mr. Pemberton Billing, giving detail of his war service, and that on two occasions ho was setit, when an offiger, to obtain information in Germany as a civilian, and became ronfidentially associated with Ad- miral Sueter.

The Air Service at that time was in such a state as to give grave cause for anxiety among the senior, commanders, and, after conferences, it was decided that a senior officer should resign and, as a civilian, contest elections, if necessary. to concentrate public opinion on the state of the Air Service.

Immediately before the session was closed, Senator Hugo Black, Alabama Democrat, and J. E. Prince, editar. of Huntsville, Alabama, had offered to put on a He tendered "his resignation in fist fight in connection with the December, 1915, and it was accept question of the Government's great ed, and a letter of congratulation power project at Muscle Shoals. was written to him by Admiral

Following the lobby hearing. Senator Joseph Robinson announc ed that the Association Against Prohibition had refused to turn its books over to the Senate committee for examination;

"This is the first time anyone has refused to show books in such a connection," he said.

Mr. Pemberton Billing said that after unsuccessfully contesting Mile End he contested, within a week. a by-election at Hertford, and Sir Joan Rolleston, leader of the Coalition Party, wrote to Lord Balfour, then First Lord, of the Admiralty, "Unless you can assist is to discredit him I fear he will he returned"

Mr. Pemberton Billing said that he made no reference to that letter and the contest was. successful.

(Continued on next Column.)

The statement complained of was made by a man knowing full well that it was utterly false, and that there was nothing dishonourable about his service.

He then described how he drove to the Admiralty and saw Admiral Sueter.

An Admiralty Dance." "Admiral Sueter," he said, "jumped up from his chair and we danced round the room, saying,

We've got 'em, we've got em. and now we'll get our Air Service"."

He took steps immediately after the statement was brought to his notice to reserve halls throughout the constituency to deny the cusations.

Mr. Justice Rowlatt pointed out that damages could only be claim el in man had said something.) about him and he lost his business. or something of that sprt.

Mr. Pemberton Billing: Does your Lordship hold that the money I properly expended" is damage?

not

Mr. Justice Bowlatt: I am wrong you can go to the Court of Appeal about it. That being so the action cannot go any further:

The jury returned a formal verdict for Admiral Sueter on the judge's direction.

Mr. Hilbery. K.C, for Admiral Sneter, asked for costs, which were granted.

"The nerves absorb Sanatogen as the parched earth drinks up water"

Those are the words of a physician. He continues: "It is a point among moden physicians to strengthen and nourish the nervous system is the source of all mental and bodily vitality. For this purpose nothing has been devised to equal Sanatogen."

And he is only one of the 24,000 physicians who took the trouble to express in writing that they had tried Senatogen and found it a good restorative and reliable builder of health.

Prof. Mann, formerly

Assistant Professor of Physiology at Oxford University, for instance, wrote- after two years of study on the subject of Sanatogen: "A building-up process goes on in the nerves after the administration of Sanatogen."

When you do not feel

quite up to the mark, when your nerves or general health are not as good as they might be, try Sanatogen for a few weeks,

Santrogen wer do you good. It is sure to strengthen the whole nervous system and by doing this is improves your general health, your vitality and your energy," for: "The nerves absorb Sanatogen as the parched earth drinks up water"
