PROHIBITION.

RESULTS OF THE LITERARY DIGEST'S STRAW VOTE.

MAJORITY IN FAVOUR OF REPEAL.

[UNITED FRI38.]

Washington, April 10-Without debate, the Senate today passed the GS38,000,000 appropriation for cohibition enforcement for next

year.

It likewise passed the entire post office treasury bill, totalling an expenditure of, upwards of

G.81,000,000,000,

New York, April 10. At the end of the fifth week of the Literary Digeft's" nation-wide straw vote to test United States views on

prohibition, the vote was follows:

For continued enforcement *12,549 votes.

For modification 34,260 votes. For repeal-1,040,207 votes. This showing, sa compared with the figures last annouared by off cials în charge, showed a slight in- crease in the percentage of those favouring enforcement and modi fication, and a slight decrease for repeal. It was plain, however, thaz repeal sa still the most popular of the three answers to questions worded as follows:

1." -Do you favour the continu ance and strict enforcement of the 18th Amendment and the Vol-

stead Law,

2.

Do you favour a modifen- tion of the Folatead Law to per mit light wines and beer?

3. Do you favour a repeal of the Prohibition Amendment

REASONS FOR SECRECY IN SOUND PRODUCTION.

yti

"Why is there so much secrecy about the making of talking pic- tures" is a question frequently, asked of studió, officials when they explain that no visitors are por mitted on the sound stages.

Thornton Freeland, the director

of "Three Live Ghosts," United Artists' all-talking picture featuring an all-star cast, which is now the feature attraction at the Queen's Theatre, explains the new order of things in Hollywood studios.

To see how pictures are made and to cast admiring glances at the star and feature players is the ambition of countless

Freeland, "that people should want to visit the studio. Stories of the colour and glamour of picture-making have been Broadcast over the world. Naturally, one would like to

see in person the people he has read so much about. In the days of silent pictures, there was no bar to visitora, but with the

advent of talking pictures, things have changed. It is no longer possible to permit visitors on a act, because of the absolute quiet necessary during the filming of a talking picture.'

A false noise on a set during the filming of a seere would not only spoil the scene but entail the loss of thousands of dollars. Studio officials were reluctant in barring visitors from the stages, but the intricate mechanical details con- neeted with talking picture making, coupled with heavy financial loss in the event of scenes being spoiled through carelessness, left them no

The only exception to the visitors rule made daring the filming of "Three Live Ghosts" was the admittance to the sound stage of Joan Herbert, 11-year-old daughter of Beryl Mercer, famous character Betreas, who heads the

all-star cast with Charles. Me- Naughton, Joan Bennett, Robert Montgomery, Claud Allister, Hilda Vaughn, Shayle Gardner, Harry Stubbs. Jack Cooper, Jocelyn Lee, Nancy Price and Tenen Holtz.

FILM IS GREAT SEQUEL TO "BEAU GESTE."

"Benu Sabreur," the thrilling melodrama which will have its first local showing at the Majestic Theatre, Kowloon, to-day, is re- plete with great scene-how else could such villains as Noah Beery, William Powell and Mitchell Lewis have such powerful rôles ?..

Dr. Ernest Cher- rington, Director of Publicity for the Anti-Saloon League, urged all prohibitionists in the United States to refrain from participation in the poll. He said it was merely a ges- ture and should not be taken seri- Dusly:

"The notoriously "wet states like New York will poll a tremendous majority smothering the 'dry' senti- ment of smaller states," he said.

Estimates of the total cost of the poll run at nearly G.81,000,000.

A NEW CLASS FOR CARNERA.

HEAVY HEAVY-WEIGHT CLASS INVENTED BY.

MANAGER.

[UNITED PRE38.]

San Francisco, April 10.-A new boxing division, the "heavy heavy weights, was unoficially created to-day.c

The manager of Primo Carnera, the Vast Venetian, invented it.

He announced that he had signed Carners to meet the giant negro fighter George Godfrey in a 10- round battle in Los Angeles some time in Juno for the "heavy heavy, weight championship of the world." Indications were that Godfrey would be Carnera's first genuine American opponent, although at present rates the Italian will by June have knocked out well over a Bcore of "Bet-ups."

Godfrey, who was born in Mobile, Alabama, in 1901, is 6 ft. 2 'in tali and weights 225 lb. Carnera is something over six feet and a half high, weighs not far from 980 h. and wears size 'shoes.

a treaty with him! Conjure up in your mind's eye the charge on the Great Oasis, with five persons battling five thousand, the dynamite mines planted in the sands, the slaying of the desert wolves with modern warfare methods. Never has a picture before been packed with so many melodramatic mo ments.

The entire story is

of romantic appeal. Henri makes a sacred row with his military uncle- to live and die for France and never look at a woman. A beautiful girl appears. They face death to gether on many occasions. He rescues her from drowning and also from the blood thirsty, tribesmen. She ultimately succeeds in a mission for France, where he has failed. What is he to do-go back on his vow, or refuse her love 1 It is a romance as beautiful as has ever been written and as dramatic as has ever been conceived!

In this sense, "Beau Sabreur ' differs vastly from anything ar this. They have put comedy into the picture, and after many spectacular. and melodramatic scenes, the story logical, too.

The comedy roles are well pro trayed. Noah Beers as the gay buffer, the Sheikh El Hamel, turns from a force desert chieftain into "a good-natured old soul, with more vanity than thirst for blood. Joan Standing, as Maudio, bunts for many reels for her ideal shickh, and finds him.

"Benu Sabreur" is full of sp peal for the fair sex. The hand- some Major Henri 'de Beaujolais, played by Gary Cooper, daring death at every turn at the hands of treacherous Touaregs, saving the life of the girl he doesn't want to love, virile, dashing and intriguing
