The situation is known to be' serious, and opponents of the Hoover Administration are endea- vouring. to capitalize it, but exact statistics of the sort available in English and other European coun- tries are not available.
General business, the reports indicate, shows an improvement during the past week. Among the businesses affected are building, the Automobile trade and general in- dustrial activity.
Retail trade is suffering some- what on account of the lateness of Easter this year. The continued advance of the stock market is re- garded, however, as an indication of a return of cheerfulness and confidence on the part of the gener al public.
Building and automobile produc- tion are regarded as among the most important indicators of the condition of the country and, the increasing briskness in these re- apects the first-named being aided by Fresident Hoover's construction programme is taken as a hearten- ing symptom.
Caution is manifest on the stock exchanges of the country, following the thorough-going finger-burn ing" which the general investing public suffered in the crash of some months ago, but there is an un- mistakeable trend for the better.
Discharges from Navy Yard." Washington, April 5-Senator Robert F. Wagner of New York to-day critized the action of the Navy Department in discharging Brooklyn Navy Yards at a time upwards, of 1,000 workers"in the when President Hoover was urging. that industry should assist in solv- ing the nation-wide problem of un- employment.
The New York Senator expressed the opinion that the Government should not simultaneously relieve itself of expense and responsibility in this connection, while urging private capital to shoulder special burdens for the benefit of the work ers of the United States."
