SPILLS AND THRILLS AT KWANTI.”

SAN FRANCISCO WINS SASSOON CUP AND GRAND

MILITARY STEEPLECHASE.

MONTANA'S GREAT WIN FROM CHRISTMAS. FROLIC.

[BY "MORNING DEW.")

In spite of unpromising weather, there was a very large turn- out at Kwanti yesterday when the Fanling Hunt and Race Club held their April Meeting-the last before the summer interval.

San Francisco won the Grand Military Steeplechase and Sassoon Cup from a field of five. In this race, Peterkin, who put up some sensational training performances at Happy Valley in 1922, started. He was a hot favourite, but refused to run, with the crowd. He started about a quarter of a mile behind the others" and made a gallant and spectacular attempt to catch up. He got quite close, although he did not succeed.

Christmas Frolic (Mr. Stanton) and Montana (Mr. Bulteel) made a great race of it for the Fanling Champion Steeplechase. The ponics ran neck and neck all the way, but just before the last hurdle, Christmas Frolic, who was still full of running, re- fused the jump. He was, therefore, lest in a field of four.

In the last race, King's Counsel, a heavily backed favourite, was involved in a tumble in which Osswaltwizzle was mixed up. Both Messrs. Murray and Churchill were heavily thrown, but fortu... .... nately without serious incident

The cups won during the afternoon. were given away by Mrs. Dyer:

The weather behaved nicely throughout the afternoon, but just after the last râre, a heavy drizzle commenced. The betting and enah sweeps figures support the contention that the racing it Kwangti is getting more and more popular.

A pleasing selection" of music was rendered throughout the afternoon by the band of the 1st Battalion. The Somerset Light Infantry.

THE RACING.

April avoirdupois Stakes.

Diana led in a field of eight lal the first race, but had to give way to Sunloch, who led after the first quarter of a mile. Over the last hurdle, Sunloch was leading, but Mongolian Stag, which was well up all the time, beat Sunloch- in the atraight. Ho got the verdict by "nose!"

Diana was third. The winner paid his supporters 21-1.

Grand Military Steeplechase and Sassoon Cup.

Peterkin refused to start until the rest of the field of five had gone almost three furlongs. Then he set to work and caught up more

than a quarter of a mile,

San Francisco and Penhole led most of the way, the former eventually winning. Huntington get third place, being only a short head behind the second.

Peterkin was fourth. Harford did mot finish.

The Summer Handicap. November was hot favourite here and he won easily. Fern Leaf, the old stalwari, was second, Duke of Neiblung was third and Buster Inst."

November led by two lengths from Fern Leaf over the first mile, but in the last part of the race, he made little of the opposition. Fern Leaf was many lengtha ahead of the third pony, Duke of Neiblung. Fanling Champlon Steeplechase

and Borderers' Cup." Christmas Frolic and Montana led all the way in this race, leaving Movanagher and Bright Prospect a good distance to the rear.

Over the last härdje Montana left little room for Christmas Frolic to jump, and the latter refused this burdle so that he was last in a field

of four.

:.

Bright Prospect just lost to Movanagher in the race for second place.

The Easter Maidens, In spite of an entry of 22 ponies, only five started here. Mr. Murray on Osswaltwizzle was thrown op- posite the winning post, the first time round, bringing down King's Council.

Tarnborg was first, with Snow- drift second and Lightning third. Lightning refused the last hurdle, otherwise he might have won.

OUTLAWS ATTACK HANDICAPS AND

SWATOW REGION SCENE OF DARING COUP,

PLACE RANSACKED AND

GENTRY ABDUCTED, '

More disturbing reports have been received from Swatow with regard to the Communist bands in Eastern Kwangtung, which attacked, a mar- ket place in Eityang district, some eighty north of Swatow, last week.

In view of the departure of the garrison troops, which had recently. routed them, the Communist ele ments in Kityang decided to attack the Sun Bang Hui, some distance. from the city of Kiryang. Prior to their attack upon the place, they dispatched twenty men there to cut off the telephone lines. At about 4 p.m., the Communists "poured in in large numbers and attacked the police station. As the strength of the force was inadequate, men had to he dispatched by bicycle to the Magistrate's office in the city to ask for help, but before reinforce- ments could arrive from the city, the police were forced to retreat. The Communists then ransacked the place and fed, carrying away with them over ten people, before the arrival of the Magistrate's Foldiers.

During the fighting, grave appre hension was opused and wealthy, merchants fed to the city for shelter.

Word has been received from Wachow to the effect that most of the Kwangsi-Ironside "

It was revealed, in consequence of the reconnaissance flights, that the rebel troops are disidelined to withdraw farther west. It is sur mised that it might conceivably be a trick to "trap" the Caston- Nanking, troops, in view of the fact that Wusuan is of no strategie im- and that they are not likely to abandon their strongholds (Sunchew and Kweibsien) without any further fighting. Six aeroplanes are bombing Sun- chow and Eweihsien daily. They visit the, two cities three times a day and each machine carries, at a time, three bombs weighing a hun- dred pounds apiece. It is under- stood that the Nanking Govern- ment has dispatched another fight. ing aeroplane to assist in the cam- paign.

As the West River has risen, the gunboats are how able to proceed to the upper reaches, Admiral Chen Chak, who arrived in Wuchow lately, has proceeded to the front to direct the naval forces.

.

Destitution and ruin are stalking abroad in the war area, especially Sunchow, Kweitsien and Naming. About 90 per cent. of the popula tion of Sunchow, which is bombard- ed by aeroplanes daily,, have fled from the city. All shops and stores have closed their doors. At night, no pedestrian is seen on the streets, ing. Strong defensive works have as curfew is enforced every even-

been erected and trenches dug. The prices of foodstuffs are soaring skyward due to the shortage of arrivals.

Conditions are similarly bsd in Kweihsien, where over 70 per cent. of the merchacts have suspended business. No civilians are allowed to go out of doors after 0 p.m. Live wire entanglements are erect- ed on the river-side,,

In Nanning, conditions are lean grave, but people are feeling very uneasy and merchants are doing very little business. Merchants are forced to contribute large sums to the Kwangsi troops time and again for war expenses. The city is often. menaced by the Communist froops under Li Ming Shui, who are re- ported to have been beaten by the Kwangsi troops recently.
