Why the change ? None other reason than the fact that the auta mobiles, ever seeking and invading new territories, have once again proven their might.

Very few Chinese drive their own cara. The American and the French Consuls are prominent among the foreigners who do their own driv: ing. Now statisties from the Public Works Bureau of the Special Muni- cipality shows that Nanking is the proud possessor of 1,350 machines. There are 14 private-owned auto- mobiles and 523 hire cars, besides

"Unapproachable" as the machines have proved in the past, 1980 witnesses an even finer production in NORTON. Many important improvements are embodied in the new NORTON designs including enclosed valve gear mechanism and push rods, detachable cover for Rocker Box, improved arrangement of cylinder head layout, efficient silencer, and Chromium plating..

COME AND INSPECT IT-AT-

While this view agrees with our own opinions on the subject, it seems somewhat strange, that a Committee appointed to conduct an inquiry into a controversial subject should commence its labours by It is the same with cars. I have declaration which prejudices the just tried out one of the few Hill-gold versus silver issue. Dan Straight Eights. There is something about it which is for ever Hillman, but it is not like any of the Hillmans which preceded it.

Distinctive.

Were I to say it was much better it would be an affront to cars which I respected in a yester-year, and yet I have a mind to say it.

At any rate, it was very differ- ent, pleasurably different. It had an "Lir about it, an air of dis tinction and dignity.

I felt somehow..ns though I was particularly well dressed as I sat in it. It was the sort of ear in which it seemed to be just a little & pipe-a "cigar, outre to smoke yes--but not a pipe.

It seemed fit that my little dog, which accompanies me on most of my motoring tours, was a thorough. bred Sealyham.

The First National, British pic- sure, founded on Collinson's Owen's novel "Zero," was presented at the Majestic Theatre, Kowloon, yesterday... Jack Raymond dirented this picture from the scenario pre- pared by Lydia Hayward, the bril liant screen playwright, whilst the cant is a particularly strong one, including Fay Compton and Stew- art Rome, supported by Joanne de Casalis, Sam Livesey, and Derinea Shirley.

The story deals with an author who is not satisfied with his home life. He writes a play just prior to leaving for the Continent, but the train, in which he is travelling is wrecked in France, and the author

is reported dead. The author decides to keep the rewa of his escape secret, and in France. According to advertisement spand again in Italy, he meets a lady, pearing elsewhere, the public are who attracts him extremely long- invited to submit written or verbal views to the Committee on the ing for old associations become too terms of reference, the first of strong for him when he visits the which reads: Is the present, eur. rency the most advantageous for

ing car, a car which preserves it ancestral individualism but which is yet a type to itself.

་་

The Hillman Streight was in- troduced last year. It came as, & British gesture to the world, for it

was obviously a car which was designed with a view to the re- quirements of overseas motering.

Its advent caused no little sur- prise.

Here was an eight-cylinder high- brow par nowing what Britain could do in the matter of power splitting, at a price of £433.

It sounded too good to be true. But it was and is true..

A Safety Model.

The car I took out was a safety saloon, that is to say, it was fitted with Triplex safety glass, and em- ployed Dewandre vacuuin Servo brakes.

Its headlamps were of the dipp ing reflector type, and every con- trol was easily to hand or to foot, At all speeds I founs her smooth and immediately responsive to throttle control. Applying the brakes was like treading on velvet, and in traffic, well, if you want a demonstration of the Bexibility which comes of power splitting, a Straight Eight is a revelation.

I just luxuriated the Surrey Hills, travelling fast nr in majestic moderation..

It was motoring at its best, with a delightfully easy wheel to add to the general comfort. I think I can say of the Hillman Streight that, in its class--if it has a class-it is one of the best value-for-money cars on the market.

The Unit.

The engine is an eight-cyclinder monobloc with

capacity of 2,690.c, which calls for a £20 tax. It has overhead valves and a five- bearing crankshaft. Ignition is by water-proof coil.

The clutch is a single dry plate. On the large steering wheel one finder throttle and ignition hand controls, and mounted in the centre are the electric horn button and a switch controlling the headlight dimmers.

The gear level and the hand brake are on the right-hand side. It is a matter of personal taste as

to which is the better side to place these controls.

I prefer them on the right-hand Bide, and I find them just where I would have them on the Hillman Streight.

Incidentally, I had my firat joy ride in a Hillman Streight over the European Alps, so that there was no need for me to try her out on any really steep acclivities. I knew she was a good climber...
