The improvement in the local share market referred to in circular of the 8th instant has become more general during, the past week and a very good business has resulted in both investment and speculative stocks, and in many instances at enhanced rates. In apite of a good deal of proht tak- ing there is no weakness in the market, which closes strong at very substantial advances on last week's

Banks-Hong Kong and Shang- hai Banks in sympathy with the .drop in Sterling Exchange, have further improved and were booked A $1,400. The latest cabled quota tion from London is £118 (Middle). Marine and Fire Insurances.-- Unions have had a further big "advance resulting in a rise of $45 during the week and shares have changed bands up to 8430, closing with sellers at 8445. Cantons have likewise strengthened. and were placed in fair quantities at 8810. Hong Kong Fires have also harden ed and were negotiated up to 8015, while China Fires are enquired for at the improved quotation of $355. Underwriters are higher with buy- ers at 81.
