JAPAN 'AND AMERICA COMPROMISE.

NO FRANCO-ITALIAN

-AGREEMENT

[THOUGH XEUTER'S AGENCY.]

LONDON, March 16.

It is understood that the narrow- Anglo-American division at tho Naval Conference has been remov. ed. Both are now a hundred per cent, in agreement. This implies a Japanese-Americsa understanding on the question of heavy cruisers, for which Japan's claim of seven- tenths of the Americaa tonnage threatened to force up the Anglo- American figures. The frequent. lengthy, conversations between Senator Reed and Mr. Matsudaira have evidently bome fruit. -

It is understood that the Japan ese, and American delegations have agreed to a compromise whereby the Japanese consent to a reduction in their percentage of 8-inch gun cruisers, and receive compensation in a higher percentage of destroy. ers and submarines. This achieve ment is most important because it means the Conference, if desired, can make a Three-Power igree- ment.

4,000 Horsepower.

The British car is equipped with 24 cylinders, with two engines supercharged to develop 4,000 re- volutions per minute and 4,000 horsepower. While it is patterned. after the Golden Arrow in some respects. it has many additional features, and is understood to re- present the genius of English en- gineers, who have also profited by: French experience in their quest for a ear to shatter the existing record.

Don has been preparing his racer since his arrival here in early. March, and is scheduled to make his trials within the next two weeks, In his party are William F. Sturm, Don's ́business manager; Louis Coatelen, chief engineer for Sun- beam, and seven mechanic.

Its total length. is about 27 feet, with a wheel-base of-15 feet. The motors are installed in a narrow vahape. There is no conventional radiator, but water to cool the cylinders circulates between shell of the car. The fuel tanks are the walls of the double aluminum

behind, and the car is rear-driven, with two propeller shafts and no differential.

Precautions Against Accident. In view of fatal accidents during past speed trials on the wave packet sand of Daytona Beach, unusual precautions have been taken to pra tret the driver in case of accident.

The bottom of the Silver Bullet is protected by steel plate, which is expected to prevent à collapse of the whole machine in eage

A wheel should come off while revolving at the tremendous speed of 2,000 times per minute. Steel hoops rise above the driver's seat to afford him at least partial protection if the car should turn over.
