Health.

The health of the School has been better at Stanley than it was at Pokfulam and in the City. The general health has remarkably im- proved, and the number of minor ailments diminished.

EVIDENCE RIGHT OF A POLICEMAN,

The greatest class distinction and the strongest barrier to the child born in the gutter mounting to Buckingham Palace, is not his birth, and not the poverty of his parents, but his dirty fingernails, and his illiterate and ungrammati- cal speech.

If I were the Minister of Labour I would concentrate for the next five years in trying to bring about Bernard Shaw's ideňl educa- tion. Mr. Shaw has said that the only three things a child needed to learn were: How to get off a mar- ing hus backwards: how to find your way about in Bradshaw; and how to behave like a Duchess when you went to Brighton that every- body would think you were. a Duchess."

LEARNING.. THEIR "OWN LANGUAGE.

Two Scottish-born children who can only speak Dutch have recently been admitted to the Royal Cale donian Schools, Bushey, Herts."

Their names are Jean and Catherine, aged nine and seyen years respectively, and their young lives have been full of romance and tragedy.

Mr. J. Cordery, secretary of the schools, said that the children have neither father nor mother, and the school's first task will be to teach them their native language.

Adopted "Mothar,"

"Jean and Catherine," said Mr. Cordery, "are the children of a young Dundee couple who were married in South Africa after being sweethearts since childhood. Both parents died-the father in 1827, four years after his wife-and the children were under the care of an elderly Dutchwoman, who loved them passionately."

Relatives at home cebled for the two girls to be sent home, but they and their guardian had vanished. Eleven months later the three were found in a tiny inland village.

"The woman had set her heart on keeping Jean and Catherine, while they in turn had become at- tached to their Dutch mother. The final parting was pathetic, for.. she was broken-hearted, and plead ed for the girls to be left with her When she at last realised that Jenn and Catherine were passing out of her life, probably for ever, sho kissed them and hugged them again and again. Then she retired to the loneliness of her home.".

A dead hand protruding from a cupboard in a deserted house on Putney Heath, London, led to the discovery last month in the cup- board of the body of Nellie Ashby, who had been missing from the home of her sister in Fulham since November 21. Suspended fron a hook in the cupboard was the broken remnant of a silk stock- ing, with which the girl apparently hanged herself. The caretaker of the house discovered her body by chance, and near by found a Berib- bled noto which said: "I have been driven to do this. A woman must always pay.
