The system of Travellers' Cheques was originated in 1801 by the American Express Company with the object of creating a form of travel currency which would give the bolder the security of a letter of credit and at the same time the convenience of local currency. The Company registered the cheques under the trade naine of AMERICAN EXPRESS TRAVELERS' CHEQUES? the word Travellers' being spoiled with one "1".
