APOLLO SETS UP NEW ONE-MILE
RECORD.
PEPPERMINT WINS TRIAL PLATE AFTER A THRILLING RACE.
MR. T. L. WONG RIDES THREE WINNERS.
FULL RESULTS" OF SECOND DAY'S RACING.
[BY," MORNING DEW."]
The outstanding feature of the second day's racing was the great performance of, Apollo in The Victoria Stakes. The pony made the rest of the field appear like a lot of selling-platers and finished the mile in 1 minute 58.1 seconds which is 4.1 seconds better than the record" sot up in 1918 by, the late Sir Paul Chater's Triumphant Dahlia.
In the Trial Plate, Peppermint won, a great race and finished very strongly. He just beat is stable companion Picallili by a short head. Both ponies are appearing in to-day's Derby, it is understood.
Mr. T. L. Wong was the most successful jockey of the day riding three winners. Mr. Heard Mr. Noodt had two wins and a third. The full table had two wins, four seconds and a third. showing the successes of the different stables and jockeys will be found below..
The attendance was as big as can be desired. Dividends were fairly good in spite of the. "fact that favourites on the whole did very well. The great question now is, who will win the Derby to-day In connection with this readers will find some loteresting notes on page 3.
THE RACING.
The Tower Stakes. Fifteen starters-twelve cld and three new subs-faced the starter in the first race of the day.
The Jungle Book, as usual, show- ed the way but faded out in the The Monk took first half mile. charge of things at the Rock follow ed by Armoury and Cream Cracker, with King's Falloch elose up.
The Monk led into the straight with Cream Cracker on his heels and Thunderbolt close up.
The Monk was not passed although Zephyr, coming up late, ran him to A neck. Cream Cracker stalled off the challenge from Thunderbolt and the Jamaica for third place.
The Tyro Stakes." "Witty Stag (Mr. Chang up) was a hot favourite in a field of ten in this race, once round, for griffins, He was left at the start, but good riding on the part of Mr. Chang any the pony sharing honours at the end. He ran second to Chivalrous, who was well-ridden by Mr. Bowl- ing, and won in a canter by four lengths. Pippin took third place, a hend in front of Cliristmas Bell.
Orlando and Silver Queen set the pare but faded out in the straight.
The Victoria Blakes, Apollo's presence in this face chassed away all would-be starters with the result that although there were eight runners, there was really no apposition to Apollo.
The pony wou nu he liked and established a new record for the mile taking 4.1-3 seconds off the previous best time, established "in 1916 by the Inte Sir Paul Chater's Triumphant Dahlia
Christmas Chimes took second place and Ma Kau Sine just ousted Misty Ev out of place money.
T
The Mongolian Stakes.
A field of nineteen faced the starter here. The start left much to be desired.
The Garrison Cup. O-Moon, in spite of his 170 pounds won in a canter, there being little opposition. He finished in the ex- Blotto jumped into the lead accellent time of 2 minutes and 6.3 companied by Greyback and Tango seconds. joined them at the five-furlong post. The field bunched up well together at the Rock, and, on entering the straight, be led by a length. What's Yours and Snaefell came up in the inst bures to displace Blotto and Greyback for the remaining places.
The Trial Plate.
This classic for Derby candidates Baw nine contenders on the field. Messrs. Hynes and Mackie sent out Peppermint and Picallili and these two ponies came in first and second, with a neck
between them.
King's Colour secured third place. Among the others were The Tiger and Windsor Stag. The former wait ed too long and the latter adopted just the opposite tactics and did not wait long enough. Mr. Heard on the Stag took 10.4 seconds over the first half mile, a killing pace, which told on the pony. The betting will show how well the public, judged the candidate's chances.
re-
The Governor's Cup. Mr. Heard, the local "star' gistered his first win here on Royal Flush, bringing the cup to the John
Peel stable.
King's Courier and One Third set the paco in a field of seven. Royal Flush and Boxing Eve were length behind the leaders. At the Rock. One Third was spent, but King's Courier went on to lead into the straight followed half a length away by Royal Flash, with Boxing Evo a further two lengths behind.
Royal Flush ensily passed the rapidly-tiring King's Courier,,and the race looked all over, when Box- ing Eve came up with a rush and challenged Royal Flush, running him to within a length. King's Courier was a poor third.
Loch Etive and Ficcy made a great fight of it for second place, Mr. Haimovitch just getting his pony there.
The Chater Cap. Majestic Hall won easily in this race, being well served by Mr. T. L. Wong, who chose to ride a waiting race. The pony was third into the straight behind Monterey Bay and Erin's Isle. The last named drop- ped out to give way to the Drake of Chantilly. At the distance post. Majestic Hall was given the bit and he needed no second invitation. Monterey Bay staved off Duke of Chantilly for second place...
2 The Racing Stakes.
Seven griffins started here, the race falling to Mr. Ho Kom Tong's Marquis Hall, the first of his griffins to score a win. Marquis Hall won easily, being well held until the straight, when he was allowed to have his own way,
African Eve and The Goods made a great fight of it for second place, the latter (Mr. Heard up) getting there by a length.
The Jockey Club Stakes, Only four starters could be found for the Jockey Club Stakes, a not- able absentee being Sitting Bull.
Carnival Eve set ahat pace throughout, followed several lengths behind by Fair Sport and Adam.
The Knigan Plate.
A fel of 24 started in this race Mr. for Subs over once rounda Heard on Bone" Again rode a meritorious race to win, by a length from Mrs. Pearce's Piecy Thracian (Mr. Charles) secured third place. Billiards led most of the way."
