Maintenance Mado Simpler, There are certain features about the upkeep and maintenance of a car which in many cases, in view of the tremendous strides made in the past few years, appear to be positive anachronisms. The aver age arrangements for emptying oil from the crankcase are a glaring example. Undoubtedly, the result is that owners shirk the filthy task of changing the oil in the sump and postpone it long after its proper time, with detrimental effect to the engine.
A record of another sort entirely has been the subject of recent letters in the technical press: "What is the greatest distance a car can go result of a world survey, for in-without the cylinders being decar

Marine Engines for Overseas. South American markets have loomed very large in the public eye recently; partly no doubt as a re- salt of the British Trade Commis sion headed by Lord D Abernon. There is a tremendous field for British engineering products and the large contracts received for railway materials, etc. indicate that foreign competition, however keen, can be defeated.

The Khiva was on a voyage from Shanghai to Hong Kong when shortly after midnight on March 12 distress signals were observed from the Giessen. The Khiva approach. ed to within half a mile of the wreck and took on board two. pas- sengers and five members of the crew of the Giessen from one of the fatter ship's boats. This boat then returned to the wreck and shortly afterwards a lifeboat was sent from this Khiva but upon reaching the wreck it was found that the remain- ing members of the crew had mean- while been transferred to the light- house.
