LADIES RIDE WELL.
Glorious weather favoured the Gymkhana Meeting held by the... 1st Battalion, The Somerset Light Infantry, at the Xwanti Steeple- chase Course, Fanling, yesterday afternoon. Tho meeting was-a completo success, splaadid horsemanship and amusing caces being features of the day's sport.
A very large attendance thoroughly enjoyed the races, among those present being, HE, the Hon. Mr. W. T.. Southorn, C.M.G. (Officer Administrating the Government) H.E., ViesAdmiral Sir A. K. Waisteli, K.C.B., H.E. Major General J. W. Sandilands, C.B., C.M.G., D.3.0, Lieut. Col. C. H, Little, D.S.O., and Major Crake.
During the afternoon, the Band of the lab Bat. The Somerset Light Infantry played selections, which were much appreciated.
Apart from a broken wrist sustained by Lt. R. N. Thicknesse who had the misfortune to "fall after "taking a hurdle in the second race (Gymkhana Cup), and a nasty kick from a mule which cut the face of a seaman of H.M.S. Sterling laking part in the Service Mule Race, the eight events were run off without mishap.

On entering the straight, Sunloch took second place from Chink Ob who had fallen behind. The Ptar- migan (Mrs. Chubb) was now third position and held it till to the end. A Steeplechase about 1 mile, Sucre (Mr. Richardson up) took the lead from the start with Sun-weight for inches raised 10 lb Tach in close attendance. It was a neck to neck race up to the last (water) jump when Sunloch forged ahead to win by half a length. Sheila, with Lt. Comdr. Bulteel up was third a few lengths behind.
Winners of more than one steeple! chase (including Gyrakhana Mect- ings) barred. Winners once, 7 lbs. extra.
Ladies. Quelt Pegging.
In this event the ladies showed very goodborsemanship, Mrs. Brownrigg in particular. Several ladies started with a gallop and approached the quoits in a way which would do credit to a veteran rider. Miss Scott Harston also rode well, but had bad luck in just tipping the quoits each time..

This event proved to be full of fun and excitement. The ladies lined up behind makeshift counters upon which were laid the

The finish proved very amusing. A mule which had led all the way and looked an easy winner, sudden ly stopped when about ten yards from the host. and 'refused to do more than a trot with result that the second, animal passed to take first place.
