The system of Travellers Cheques was originated in 1001 by the American Express Company with the object of creating a form of travel currency which would give the holder the security of a letter of credit and at the same time the convenience of local currency. The Company registered the cheques under the trade Dame of AMERICAN EXPRESS TRAVELERS' CHEQUES ' the word "Travellers' being spelled with ons "1". The ad antago of the Choques was so apparent that other banking institutions adapted the system.
