The police have now obtained de- Buite information regarding the identity of the two Americans who stowed away from Manila on board the N.Y.K. Kaga Maru, and when the two men made their re-appear ance before. Mr. Whyte Smith at Kowloon Magistraey yesterday, it was stated that arrangements had been made for them to be sent back to Manila.
When they appeared before his Worship last week they said they were woldiers from Fort Santiago, Manila. They gave the names of Riley and Segoria to the captain of the Japanese steamer when discover- ed on board.
Detective-Sergeant Kellett inform- ed the Court that a wire had been received from the Manila authori- ties stating that the two men were soldiers. A request was made to the Dollar Steamship Company that the en he sent back by the first boat The Company had already arranged with the American Consul, for the two men to be taken back to Manila by the first Dollar. boat (which is due to leave on Sunday or Mon- day).
The American Consul wished the Court to keep the men in custody until the departure of the ship.
Mr. H. K. Holmes, C.B.E. (Crown Solicitor), in his outline of the case, said the prisoner rented a cubicle in a money-changer's shop in Shanghai Street, Yuumati, pre- tending to be a box-maker who was expecting his fokis to arrive from Canton.
The cubicle was rented on August 12, 1929. Six days later the master of the shop went out at about 10 p.m.. and returning an hour later, he found four men posted inside by the accused. A revolver was pointed at the master, and he was held up while they stole the pro- perty mentioned in the charge.
