"With regard to Goddard's re- ports, it is not material for the purposes of recovering money, in a case of this kind, that the reports should be corruptly false. It is enough to say that Goddard had to account for moneys he received in circumstances which put him in n position in conflict with his dutics.

In Blackmail Cases.

"I do not take the view that if A man in a position of authority travels outside his duty and levies what was termed simple blackmail an innocent persons, that the Crown would be entitled to say the money so extorted was money received to their use, any more than if it had been extorted physically by the use of the truncheon.

Guilty Knowledge, "Regarding the circumstance that he is proved to be a corrupt officer, it is elementary that the commis sion of one crime is no evidence at all-it is not admissible, even-of thecommission of another: and when you couple with the circum- stance that he has this great sum of money, which could not have been derived from his salary, that does not carry it any further as a matter of proof. It is only a matter of shrewd guessing that, as he was a kanye who has got money which cannot prima faciz be accounted for, it must be the proceeds of other knavery. To say that constituted proot seems to me fallacious.

Lastly as to whether he was secretive and acting apparently with guilty knowledge. Of course, be
