HIS EXCELLENCY'S APPEAL TO THE RURAL
COMMUNITY,
POSSIBILITIES OF THE DISTRICT.
Sir Cecil Clementi bas always taken the greatest interest in the New Territories and in everything done to further the welfare and prosperity of its inhabitants.. The steadily increasing sucecas of the Agricultural Show-that opened on Saturday, was the third of the earies-must be a scurce of real pleasure to His Excellency", who said, in the course of his specs:-
"
"My happiest official days have been spent in the New Territories and I have never enjoyed any official work in my life more than that which I did as Land I feel when I come into the Officer among you years ago. New Territories that I am among old friends whose affection and help has been given me without stint."..
This year's Show was held near Sheung Shui Station, on à site more convenient to the general public, if less picturesque than the field opposite Lady Ho Tung's residence, which had previously been the scene of the event..

The Botanic and Forestry Department staged an excellent exhibit ghowing really artistic presentation, and the British "Chemical Industries Ltd. also had a large and attractive The poultry display of produce grown with their fertilisers. æection exhibits were an object lesson in what can be done in the New Territories, and though the Chinese fanner, like his confreres the world over, is cautious and conservative, there is no doubt that these annual exhibitions are having a very stimu lating effect on the agricultural community of the district,
The Show was continued yesterday, when the prizes were distributed to successful exhibitors.

THE "FLOWER SHOW'

Walking down the straight road frora Sheung Shuri balt, one could see the matsheds which housed the Exhibits, rising above the trees. They seemed to belong to the land- the familiar stape as closely 86 middle of a grey stone Chinese village, or as the round whiteness of a marquee fits in with English elm trees. But aneadows and brought face to face with the on trance, the high elaborate pilan of decorated matting stood out strongly in the empty plain of dried rice Belds, ringed about with bare hills. Perhaps it was the English laces and English voices, perhaps the dry cold, that made one fancy that a foreign erection was the Yorkshire standing among moors. There has been a large number of New Territories residents ja constant attendance at the meet- inga of which about ten have been held throughout the year. Among those who have taken un', active interest in these meetings and undertaking other duties in connec tion with the Show are Messrs. Teng Wei Tong, Fung Ki Chers, the Chinese Secretary, Ng Sing Chi, Tang Pak Kau, Troi Fo Tia and others too numerous to men- tion.
Mr. Fung Ki Cheuk's untiring efforts and interest in the Show have been a great asset. Above all, we have been deeply indebted to Sir Robert and Lady Ho Tung for their hospitality and the use of the Tung Ying Hok Po" for holding the committee meetings. In fact, success up to the present to their Ens largely been due assiduous support.
Now Features, Certain features have been added to the Show this year and among them is the beautifully prepared Handbook for which we are indebt- ed chiefly to Messrs.. Bush and How Fung and for the cover de- sign to Mr. J. H. Hunt of the Euro- pean Y.M.C.A., who has endes- voured to represent the features of the New Territories and the Show. In this connection, the heavy ex- penditure of printing the Hand. book could not be met but for

In consequence of the prolonged drought in the early part of the year, and the extremely dry wea ther eince September, it has not been possible to secure as many exhibits as we would wish, but ve are glad to bave so many and the evidence thus given of the general interest of the people on the New Territories is very encouraging.
