KOWLOON AFFAIRS.

RESIDENTS' ASSOCIATION AND STAR FERRY APPROACH.

www

At the December meeting of the Cieneral Committee of the Kowloon Residents Association, held in St. Andrew's Church Hall, Mr. C. M. Manners, O.B, E, President of the Association, took the chair. "Other members present were Mr. FC Mow Fung (Vice-President), Mr. C. Terry (Hon. Secretary), and Messrs. E. Cock, M.B.E, B. W Tape, W. J. Stokes, F. W. Staple- ton, R. Pestonji, H. Ua, J. M. Alves, W. J. Brown, Li Low Son, B. Riggs, E. C. Tregillus and Goldenberg.

In this short and apt speech Licut-Colonel Little, D.S.O., O.CW. the Somerset Light Infantry, ex- pressed what everyone present felt about the excellent boxing between men from H.M.S. Hermes and the S.L.I. staged last night at Hankow

Barracks.

Each side won five bouts and draw reflected the merits of the two-gallant teams who so worthily upheld their ship and regiment, res- pectively, at the noble art of self- defence.

The Somerset men were, perhaps, the fitter of the two and a word of special praise is due to Sergt. Nichols, their trainer, but the Hermes neu, in nearly every in stance, were the biggest fellows.

All the fights were three round afnirs.

Opening Bouts.

The first fight, a keen hard hitting affair between welter weights went to A.B. Tumming, L.-Cpl. Wood- house putting up tough resistance.

Two feather

weights, Stoker Holland and Pte. Pearce next took the ring, for one of the best fights of the evening, Pearce winning on points. He was decidedly fresher at the end, but the Stoker kept his end up all through.

The formidable Marine Smith, a very big fellow, had very little. dif- Bculty with Pte. Morris. He had the measure of his man from the first and the S.L.F. man went down early in the first round to a fierce right honk.

contest,

Ptc.

The question of", the "Star" Ferry approach was again brought before the meeting. It having been brought to the notice of the Com- mittee that the authorities proposed

to

discontinue 10 parking of private cars at the Ferry approach, i was decided to ascertain from the Captain. Superintendent of Police what, if any, alternative accom modation, would be provided.

It was also decided to write to the D.F.W., reverting to previous correspondence and to enquire it any information could be made available as to Government's inten- tions with regard to the scheme for reorganising the traffic at this spot.

More Police Promised.

A reply from the C.S:P. to the Association's letter of September (wherein it was stated that provi sions for an increase of the strength of the Police Force in Kowloon had been made in next year's Estimates, but that Government considered the provision of a sub-station at Kow- loon Tong was not yet necessary) was discussed at length.

It was unnimously agreed that the attention of the C.S.P. be drawn to the distance of Kowloon Tong from both Kowloon City and Mong Kok Police Stations," "and that Government be asked to consider their devision in view of the present large population of this district.

Hawkers and Other Noises:

Other Business,

The first contest after the in terval, was a light weight affair he- tween O.S. Scott and Cpl. Shers- ton. The young navy man was the bigger of the two, anil has a re- markably fine physique. He fought well, but against a cool and ex perienced opponent, who had the matter well in hand and won оп points.

The .L.I also won the hext fight, Pte. Summerfield, 11 very tough and vigorous fighter, being decidedly too good for A.B. Ner- stead, a bigger man, who got in some smart returns at times, but. had difficulty in holding out to the

end.

The position was more or less reversed in the next fight, Rawlings, an experienced boxer, defeating Pte. Paddick. The first round saw a lot of wild hitting, but in the next two both men vera at it hammer and tonga. Rawlings won largely thanks to his ability to get out of a tight corner and suddenly get his own back with interest.

The Fight of the Evening. AB. Swann . 3.-Sergt.. Gainey was the fight of the evening. The A.B. is an unusually big man of splendid physique. Gainey ("the cld war horse is shorter, more com pact and hard as nails. In the first round he hit the Navy man as he liked. He had Swann down, then against the ropes, and when be finally sent him down for a count

Several other matters, including the utilisation of an area in Ho Mun Tin as a playground, and the placing of watchmen at Castle Peak Beach on the same atatas ng those at Repulse Bay, having been dealt with, the meeting closed.
