Sta--The writer did not hear the Dean's sermon on Sunday, the 15th instant, because he has discontinued: going to church, after being a ro gular attendant for a number of years, but the report was read in these columas on Monday morn ing..

How can 'the Dean or any of the clergy belonging to the Cathedral expect to get the beat out of a congregation when in less than two years the whole church has been disorganised (the Dean might say reorganised "), new institutions effected and the whole spirit of " the parish church taken away?

The Dean himself sneered about our old fashioned hymns with meaningless phrases," those hymns which had many sacred memories and associations. One hymn in particular which was held up to ridicule from the pulpit being, Now the day is over,' which in the writer's mind always brings back the picture of a tiny daughter passing over. In the place of this hymn book we got a sort of hash up of every denomination, very tuneless, hard to sing, and

the fact that the Dean wanted it introduced.

to

Surely the reason why the sense of loneliness is, aften borne strong- ly upon the clergy is due the fact that the old fashioned folks in the congregation, who loved the sweet, simplicity of the parish church, were told to get out or accept the new order. The old idea that the body of the church was the congregation's and the altar the priest's charge, was soon knocked in the head in Hong Kong, and is it to be wondered at that" the con- gregation has fallen off!

After struggling on for a few Sundays to try and get used to the new things the writer felt that it was better to stop away than be- come so modern.

We were implored to give up our sents and to abandon the idea of *hirings, only to find that there was, an ulterior motive in the_sug- gestion, which grubled the Dean und the clergy to reserve seats or stunt occasions for taijan who never otherwise visited the church.

The Dean deplores the fact that the clergy have met with indiffer- ence and some opposition," but is it not a fact that the opposition, which was no ruthlessly put down, bred the indifference? It was in- evitable.

We have had the creed flung inte ur facra from the pulpit. as being all wrong, whilst the Dean himself who fung the old A. and M. hymn book at our heads, told us what a rotten lot of singers we were, and then proceeded to give lessons in singing before he would deign to allow us to sing with the choir, so that one wonders if this modern tendency which is emptying the pews, whilst it provides bat breakfasts for reluctant. worship- pers. might not one day give us very snappy movie-tones for empty phrased sermons.-Yours, etc.,

PAUL VLAINE, Hong Kong, December 18.

RADIO RESTRICTIONS: 'A 'PROTEST.

[TO THE EDITOR OF THE HONG KONG DAILY PRESS."]

SI-I can assure you that Hong Kong's radio dealers welcome the leader in your Sunday contum- porary and now that the ball bas been set rolling by the Press, I reckon it is up to every wireless enthusiast in the Colony to voice his indignation against the new regulations:-

1. The local broadcast station, after establishing itself in ruch an arbitrary manner, should have carried on as a servant of the radio public. It has become an autocratie

2-The additional clerical work now being forced upon dealers is discouraging enterprise and killing the trade.
