Markets have been irregular, movements to some extent having been sentimentally affected by the debacle which took place earlier in the week on the New York stock markets, the influence of which on the industrial situation there it is $95 at present difficult to determine. A further feature of the week' was the rither unexpected reduction yester- day of the Bank of England Rate $685 fiom d) per cent, to 6 per cent., a

3.10 $9,20 welcome change which should serve T160 to restore confidence and tend to stimulate the general economic posi- Federal tion. The New York Reserve Bank also reduced its rate yesterday from 8 per cent, to 3 per cent, and the Amsterdam Bank Rate was lowered from 3) per cent. to 5 per cent.

Tin has been irregular and the market, though recovering from carlier depression, still shows decline of £1.10 for cash and £2.10 for three months as compared with our last report. A feature of the woek has been the comparative sear feity with which Cnah Tin has been | #4.70

offered, which has resulted in a substantial reduction of the con tango, now 3 compared with £4 last week. To some extent this was influenced by the lowering of the bank-rate which, in the opinion of some, was taken as indicating some further reduction in the near fature.

Sales in the East during the week Have been considerable again, amounting to 1,995 tons; shipments thence for November are estimated at about 10,000 tons. The statistics published to-day (of which we ap- pend some particulars below) show- ing an increase in the visible supply of 1.432 tons, were very much as had been anticipated. Premiums on Straits and Bunka Tin are quoted at £4.10 and £13 respectively.

Demand on the part of consumers in this country has been moderately good and rather more activity has prevailed on the Continent, but con- ditions in America, owing to the uncertainties arising out of the de- pression on the stock markets, have ven irregular, buying there having been on the whole on, a rather re- stricted scale.

The irregularity which the market has displayed and the easy rapidity with which prices Buctuate reflect the very sensitive condition of the market; much of this is due to in fluences arising out of the situation in America and the difficulty of de- termining to what extent the posi tion there may have been precipital- d by declining industrial activity, and further as to how the consump- tion of tin will thereby be affected. The immediate future there is in consequence regarded with partieu T.15 la interest: the Autumn trade movement in this country and on the Continent has disappointed many expectations, and if America is to experience a falling off in con- sumption, it can scarcely fail to result in a further recession in the price of tin: there is so far no very definite evidence to this effect, but the prevailing uncertainty will no doubt occasion irregular movements until the outlook can be more clear- ly defined. Meantime, a certain amount of intermittent support is $6 afforded by the bull party, and the technical position is not too bad, the market at times bearing a rather oversold ppearance.

The following day, with more favourable advices from America, the market recovered to £71.5, but on some heavy concen- trated selling, values have since given way and the price nt the eluse shows a decline of 12/02. for cash and £1.12.6 for three months. as compared with last Friday. The unsettled condition of the market must be largely ascribed to Ameri- ean, influences, but at the same time demand on the part of consumers has been dull, whilst some appre- hension exists is to the ability of the Association to maintain the present price of Electrolytic, especially in the circumstances which have recently developed on the New York stock markets and which, in the opinion of some, ure likely to react on commodity mar- kets where, as in the case of cop-
