GOSSIP FROM THE SHARE MARKET.

BUSINESS RESTRICTED.

FREE ADVICE FOR INVESTORS.

[BY KUFAN:"1

Gossip aften moves the market, but no investor should either buy or sell on market gossip only.

Activities in the share-market during the past week were confacd to shares in public utility com paties, an increased turnover being registered everywhere. Rates show. ed a slight improvement, in sym pathy with the increased demand.

The November Settlement in Hong Kong passed off satisfac- torily, and with the market as steady as it is, one need not fear any serious complication locally for the December Settlement, which, by the way, will be the biggest settioment eince June 1923..

Fortunately for Hong Kong in vestors, they are of the side of the Ewo debacle, having got rid of their shares to Shaughni at high prices, and only recently have they appeared ne buyers again, when the price is so low.

The general feeling locally is that Hong Kong will not be affected at the end of this month, whether the Settlement goes through satisfac torily in Shanghai or otherwise. It is believed that should any com plication, arise locally, the general position is such that a satisfactory salution will be found. It has to he remembered that large though the December Settlement will be it is in fact very email compared to some of the settlements that were negotiated before the crash of 1923, In those days speculators and even investors pledged their credit to the utmost limit, so that in the event of any hitch only a very small minority could be found who could lay hands on ready cash. To-day the position happily is quite different, and there can be no docht hut that only a very few Anceinters adopt such methods, sc that although the December Settle. ment may mean a big loss for some investors. I don't think the losses will be so heavy..as ຜ create a "hold-up" on Settlement day.

The news from Shanghai concern ing

Settlement, the November though of a grave character, is not such as to cause local investors any "real concern, and it is to be hoped that the December, Settlement in the North will be cleared without any very serious, upheaval, so that those interested in the "Rialto " can look forward to brighter, and better business during 1830.

The fortnightly report of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce contains the folowing references to trade in cotton and woollen goods :-

There has been some enquiry for White Shirtings but deniers are only prepared to pay the same prices as before, and although Manchester rates are a good deal. lower than for some time, the drop ia exchange makes now business impossible at present. Local stocks of British cargo are, very low, but Japanese goods are available in moderate pricce.
