She hit the ball with precision and good judg ment and acldom seemed to be worried by her opponent's game, Her placements were accurate and at volleying, which she has only this season acquired, she showed up quite well. Her only apparent weakness was in receiving short shots a little over the net, but tak- ing the aggressive always, obe kept Mrs. James on the run most

of the time by placements all round

the court.

Mrs. James put up a gallant atruggle, especially when she pick. ed up from 35 down in the first set to lead 0-3. Her backhand was consistent and she showed some improvement in this department. Often sho engaged Mrs Tottenham at driving and long rallies, and came off pretty well, while she was most successful at tricking her op ponent with an unexpected short shot just over the net.

The Play,

Mrs. Tottenham won the first two games with ease, but two ine cross court placements by Mrs. James enabled the latter to win the third game. The former forged ahead, increasing her lead to 3-1, but the latter by a tricky short shot, a fine placement and da ace after a long rally in the next game reduced the lead to 22. A good struggle fol lowed for the sixth game. Mrs. Tottenham being over-anxious to increase her load made several errors, which enabled Mr. James to draw level. The winner then asserted herself, and playing in fine atsle secured the next two games, but netted and hit three balls out in the next game. Steady play followed in which Mrs. James, giving her best exhibition at this atage, gained the aupremacy by some fine rallies, and went ahead to lead 6-3, Mrs. Tottenham came into her own immediately after- wards and by dint of clever court- craft won the next three games, to secure the first set at 86.

Only in the beginning of the recond set did Mrs. James give the winner & run, and after leading 1-0, 2-1, fell off completely. She show ed signs of strain and was unable, to stop fra. Tottenham's Budocee- ful progress, losing the next five games.

Besides the Colony Champion- ships, she won the Championship of Ravuiza for three years, 1927, 1928, and 1920, defeating at the latter place
