HANKOW, Oct, 09. Members" of the congregation of the London Mission Church were than happy when Pastor Kung, whose capture by bandits was reported the other day walked into the Church compound a little before 8 p.m. last night, very dis. hevelled and very tired, but free and sale.

All that was known in Hankow was that the day after the capture a note was left with a wealthy family demanding $33,000 for the release of the captive. This note showed that the band had not in- tended to capture the Pastor, but a compradore who was supposed to be at his village home. This family sent the note to the relatives of the Pastor in his village.

At the first interview between a representative of the brigands and A relative of the Pastor, a demand was made for $1,000 before mat- ters were discussed, but the rela

word tive managed to get in edge wise that he had not come from the compradore but about the poor Pastor whom the brigands had taken.

This news was evidently not paia- table and the interview ended alter the relative had said that possibly 8300 might be found. The rest of the story comes from the escaped pastor.

On Monday morning after day. light, the Pastor saw guards were still sleeping soundly. He got up quietly and made sure of the weapon, He had taken every chance to examine the fasten- ings of the door, and knew that the large boit was fastened by a small crop catch.

He lifted that catch and then' found that the child was rousing. He waved his hand to the child to keep still, and strangely the child nodded assent. The big bolt alid back quietly, but the door creaked badly as it opened and the guards awoke.

Pulled the Trigger.

The Pastor bolted across a yard and dropped over a wall. His first impulse was to fire at the men as they followed, and he actually puil ed the trigger. Fortunately, the weapon proved, to be useless, for the sound of the shot would have. raueed the whole band. The men also seemed anxious to recapture their captive without making a noise:

The Pastor atill held the weapon' and as the more active man ran at him he struck out, the blow knock- ing the brigaad. senseless. The opium sot collared him, but bis strength was not equal to holding Pastor Kung, despite the latter's advanced age.

Making as fast as he could for the nearest village, he had the good fortune to meet a posse of the local militia, and, these men. cared for him and saw him to the nearest station, from which point he came on to Hankow by train,

He many friends throughout the Yangtze Valley will rejoice at this wonderful escape from the dangere which threatened him.
