Quite recently the manager of Kanopan Ocice Estate, Mr. Mo- lenaar, was wounded by a blow from a parang, and, on the after- noon of the same day, on the same plantation, another planter, Mr. Evertsen,, was attacked. The in- vestigations which followed result- ed in the discovery of a pre-ar- ranged murder plot.

It is true that the culprite al legéd that they had reasons for their actions. In the st case, the accused said that the n nager criti cised him (the coolie) because he absented himself from, work. In the second case, Mr. Everthen is said to have told a coolic that could not leave the plantation before serving out his contract, and that' the Labour Ordinance provides that time lost while ill and time spent in prison must be made good

It was therefore necessary for the coclic concerned to remain on the estate for some months longer. This be refused to do and, in a fit of temper, hurled his parang at. Mr. Evertsen.

But there were, it is said, other reasons behind these murderous at- tacks An investigation by the po-I lice showed that there had been a scaret assembly of coolies on that plantation, at which it had been decided that all Europeans should be murdered. In connection with this discovery 18 worker's were ar- rested. It seems that a mandore (overseer) whose vanity was hurt because be had not been appointed a "super-overseer had acted as the tingleader.

It is remarkable that, on the very morning on which the attack oc a visit to the planation, in the curred, the labour inspector paid absence of the manager and the coolies replied to the usual ques- tion by stating that they had no complaints to make.
