The value of a good and service able knowledge of English is now fully realised by the Chinese population, and whereas in former years only a small percentage of the boys of Hong Kong, were educated in English, to-day the most humble homes send their sons and daughters to our local schools English textbooks have to offer.
In consequence of this growing tendency to study English the large number of primary schools which have grown up recently have all been well patromised, there being, no scarcity of pupils. In fact, the number of people clamouring for admission to the local schools would surprise those who cared to give
the matter some attention.
At one of the lending Government erhools several hundred boys seek ing admission into the junior section had to be burned the school had a full house; a its own and in no circumstance could take in more than a few to each class About a hundred war admitted to the lowest class, but those who sought admission to any other olts were turned away with- out even as examination
In the higher classes I find that practically all the boys who pas out of the Government district schools go on to Queen's College to continue their studies. As a result the upper section of Queen's College is always full, and as these studente are promoted they ait for the Junior and Senior local and Matriculation examinations, and quite a riumber of studenta are sent up to the University each year.
