"The system of Travellers' Cheques was originated in 1801 by the American Express Company with the object of creating a form of travel currency which would give the holder the security of a letter of credit and; at the same time the convenience of local currency. The Company registered the cheques under the trade name of AMERICAN EXPRESS TRAVELERS' CHEQUES the word "Travellers' being spelled with one "I".
