KOWLOON F.C. CONCERT.
"BIG NIGHT" ON SATURDAY,
The Kowloon Footbal Club held another very successful concert, in the
оред air, on Saturday night..
An entirely new programme had been advertised, and the big andionce was treated to a really' Arst-class entertainment, in which music, mirth, and melody were very subtly interwoven.
Possibly the biggest hit of the aight was scored by Dick Barty and his piano." Mr. Barty kept his audience in a continual 'roar of laughter from start to finish of his "turn," and had to respond to repeated re-calls
Messrs. Oscar Eager and V. C. Labrum eo kept the fun going, and Mr. and Mrs. McLeod pre- vided excellent entertainment in a more serious vein.
**
Then there were the Misses Field," in a sprighty scene, Glimpses of Jazz, which received a very hearty reception.
Mr. H. Musson played the banjo to the Queen's taste" and the Symphonic Jazz Gang" (an ex- cellent combination of local artistes) seat everyone away to the lilt of dance music.
"Altogether, a great evening i
A Modest Hero,
An unexpected "tura" on the programme, but one which delight- ed his many friends in the Colony, was the presentation of a gold watch to Mr. Austin Spary for the raving of the life of Mr. K. S. Mekintosh of the Canadian Pacific S.S. Co., at a beach on the Castle Peak Road, on August 31.
Spud had asked his friends not to broadenst the incident, al though word of his gallantry, had leaked out (as most things do in Hong Kong), but Mr. McKintosh had evidently not forgotten his
rescuer.
Mr. G. A. Walker, in making the presentation, stated:
"I am requested to make a pre- sentation, to Mr. Spary, one of the Kowloon Football Club's playing members, not for his prowess on the football field, but in recogni tion of his very gallant conduct in eaving the life of Mr. McKintosh,' a visitor to the Colony,
"On the 31st August, Mr. McKin tosh was bathing from a beach on the Castle Peak Read. There we an abnormally strong current run- Ding with a dangerous undertow and Mr. McKintosh was quickly in difficulties. He was in an exhaust ed condition when Mr. Spary pluckily went to his assistance, and after a hard struggle succeeded in bringing him ashore.
"I
am told that the current was Bo strong, even inshort, that it was difficult to stand in shallow water and that but for people on the beach joining bands and form. ing a chain to reach out as far as possible, Mr. Spary, who was himn-. self in a state of exhaustion, could not have brought his attempted rescue to a successful conclusion."
"Mr. McKintosh is unfortunately bot in the Colony at present," but baa asked me to present on his behalf, "this gold. watch which in inscribed:
'Presented to Austin Spary as a souvenir of his brave action in saving me from drowning at Hong Kong, August 31, 1929.' "In a letter asking me to make. concert the presentation at this Mr. McKintosh writes:
The public generally may not be aware of Mr. Spary's heroig action, and I trust that you will have a large audience to express the Colony's appreciation of ope who is not only a hero but`a modest one.!!!
Mr. Spary, amidst great applause, accepted the present, and, as be comes a modest hero "' ducked " off the stage. But all his friends will insist upon asking him the time, in future!
AT THE QUEEN'S.
A FAST MOVING CIRCUS COMEDY.
No Control"now showing at the Queen's Treatre is a fast mov- ing comedy starring Phyllis Haver and Harrison Ford. The story is about a circus hores which is by means of radio, made so frightened that it literally runs away with race and secures the prize money. for the bankrupt circue,
Phyllis Haver, who jumped into popularity when she took the lead- jog part in "The Way All Flerb," Is a very pretty actress and in the roll of the circus-girl, she is ably supported by Harrison Ford, the hero of Smiling Through."
The M G.M. Newsrael containing pictures of the recent tennis mafeli between Helen Wills and Betty" Nuthall and there is also a Felix "Cartoon,"
"Road House," showing tenor- row, promises to be an exceedingly attractive, picture, starring a new. cotzer Maria Alba, and the popular Lionel Barrymore.
