Manchurian crops present ". normal outlook, a slight increase being reported in acreage planted.

While the situation in Manchuria causes a certain amount of un- easiness regarding the immediate future, no reaction in North China business conditions is yet apparent. Moderate. to heavy rains through- out North China have improved iuland water transportation and contributed to more optimistic crop prospects. Pinating of fall crops in certain famine areas is thus made possible, although shortage and ruling high prices of seeds may necessitate relief supplies being sent in.

Early forecasts indiente that Manchuria's cereal crop will reach 20.400,000

до tous,

increase of 400,000 tons over last year's crop. Both North and South Manchurian mixed crops are normal.

Exchange Affects Market. Shanghai bpsiness, in general, is exhibiting more than the usual sum- mer dullness. Importers in a num ber of cases report that orders 'in hand for future business are being held up because of reluctance of Chinese dealers to settle exchange or make definite commitments at present low levels. The general tone of exchange rates is steady, although the recent developments in Manchuria are being taken advan- tage of by local speculators; result- ing in silver firming alightly.

|

The extent to which the market ean be expected to recover during the course of the next few months is largely dependent upon the trend of exchange. Silver stocks in Shanghai continue to increase. Offtake is small and no appreciable upward movement is anticipated. Yangtze River trade is also un- usually dull...

Tientsin conditions continue un- changed. Upward of 90,000 Mexi ean dollars have been collected to date through the Tientsin customs surtax, which has been imposed for the Hai Ho alleviation project. Local authorities are arranging for commençament work to begin this autumn. Poor drainage in central Chihli Province is resulting in the usual seasonal inundations so des tructive to crops.

Tientsin Imports Quiet--Customs Collections Higher. Actual, Deustoms collections at Tientsin for the six months ending June 20 total 6,189,000 Haikwan taels, compared with 4,284,000 Hai- kwan taels in the like period of last year. This represents an increase of 14.5 per cent. Export collections in the 1928 period show an increase of 37.5 per cent, while import collections are more than double those of last year's period. How- ever, calculations made on the basis of old rates indicate an actual im- port decline of 20.5 per cent in dutiable import items.

Larger imports of flour, which is duty free, offset the decline in dutiable articles, leaving the total import trade at approximately the same level as the first half year.

Current import trade conditiona at Tientsin are generally quiet, be ing held in check by an unfavour able exchange, but may be expected to improve as indications develop for stability in North and North- west China:
