Mail advices from New York state that the market is dall and inclined to follow the trend of prices in
Yokohama.
We understand that the domestic consumption in the United States shews signs of falling off, partly due to the reduced eummer hosiery demand attributed to the stocking jess fad.
Prices are considered low. the opinion that easier markets will be seen during the summer months con- tinues to be expressed, and we are inclined to recommend our frienda to accumulate contracts in distant positions as recessions occur.
A'week-end cable from our New York correspondents states that Spot Raw and Throan Silks, are quiet, although prices are firm, that goods sales are lagging, and that manufacturers are withholding pur- chaeer of Raw Silk in anticipation of lower price levels.

RURAL ELECTRIC LINES.
MANITOBA'S EXTENSIONS,
["D.P." Special Service.] Winnipeg, Man. Considerable progress is to be made this year in the extension of rural electric lines in
the province of Manitoba. Speaking before the Legislature re- cently on the intent of the Electric- al Power Transmission Act, since passed, Premier John Bracken fore- chsted that the provincially-owned system would be operating about 10,000 miles of transmission lines. in sixteen years.
This year's programme which was outlined before the Legislature calls" for the expenditure of 8700.000 and with this amount of money, it is proposed to carry out a number of projects in the southern and wes tern part of the province which will bring electrical power within the reach of many additional farms.
Included in the plans of the Manitoba Power Commission is the extension of lines from Virden near the westerly boundary of the pro- vinoe. This work is expected to get under way at an early date and construction material are now being assembled. The speed with which the rural extensions will be spread over the province depends on how soon the various municipalities involved pass the necessary by-laws signifying their intentier of parti- cipating in the scheme but it is a considerable anticipated that force of men will be employed this year and that notable progress will
made

On the experiments carried out to date, and judging from what has been proved with regard to this invention, I can give an estimute of the cast in this way.
"I am told that the electrifica tion of the main ce running between Dublin and Cork under the ordinary conditions of an overhead wire or a third rail would amount to £1,000,000. If this invention works out euccessfully, giving the hest estimate we can make of cost and multiplying it by two, it could
