But Mr. Noble is equally gener team as a whole and of its captain. Of A. P. F. Chapman, he writes:

Going through" has always been a controversial question. The old-time golfers at St. Andrews had their precedence troubles, otherwise the Royal and Ancient Club would not have embodied the following in their rules, dated May 5 1338:-

Any party having lost a ball, and incurring a delay by seeking for it, shall be passed by any other party coming up, and on all occasions a two-ball match-whether by two or four players-may pass parties playing three or more halls. Also, parties having caddies may pass those carrying their own clubs."

The St. Andrews rules were not universally accepted till a much later date. Thus, the Royal Wim bledon Club had their own rules and bye-laws, dated 1883.

Still fater, some clubs employed the following rule, which, though not in the St. Andrews code. was the forerunner of the much-discuss ed rule involved recently at Sand- wich.

I am in plenty of time, I see. Those must be the players warming up a bit out there in the middle. What a lovely spot with its con trasting jade green tart and white beaches and balconies, and one feels ever so safe, even when alone, with those two watchful clock-faces peer- ing out of the vine leaves which creep over the towers at the corners of the ground.

Nice little spinning wheel up there behind that black board. It seems to do a bouncing good job of palling up consecutive numbers and makes such an effective score board. The white board under the black one says, "Last wk. (that means week, of course) fell at 349." I wonder what the first score will be to-day.
