"The system of Travellers' Cheques was originated in 1887 by the American Express Company with the object of creating a form of travel currency, which would give the holder the security of a letter of credit and at the same time the convenience of local currency. The Company registered the cheques under the-trads name of AMERICAN EXPRESS TRAVELERS CHEQUES the word 'Travellers' being spelled with one "]" The advantage of the Cheques was apparent that other banking institutions adopted the system."
