*The system of Travellers Cheques wat originated in 1901 by the American Express Company with the object of creating a form of travel currency which would give the holder the security of a letter of credit and at the same time the convenience of local currency. The Company registered the cheques under the trade- name of AMERICAN EXPRESS TRAVELERS' CHEQUES the word "Travellers' being spelled with one "I". The advantage of the Cheques was so apparent that other banking institutions adopted the system.
