LINER IN LARGE" ICE FIELD.

SKILFUL NAVIGATION BY THE CAPTAIN......

The Cunard liner Antonia, which reached Liverpool recently thres

fax, N.S., had to nose her way days Inte from New York and Hali- dend slow round a vast icefield stretching for 90 miles. For and ice encountered after leaving Hali- fax caused her stearing to drop from 343 miles in one day to s miles in another day. Skilful navi- gation on the part of the captain, Mr. G. W. Melasom, averted all danger, and the liner came through the ordeal seathless.

About 600 miles out of Halifax fog was encountered. When the hate lifted the ship found herself, confronted by a huge icefield. Capt. Melsom, describing this, said: "We found ourselves in front of pack and field ice on the eastern edge of the banks of Newfoundland. The

barrier extended about 90 miles in a north and south direction. We

tried at very slow speed to find. away round the barrier, and for three days we crept south in the hope of getting clear. At last we got away from it, and then we met another big fog which delayed us for 10 hours. When that lifted we steamed away without any fur-
