MISS 1929 MAY FAVOUR BOB-CURLS.
GROWING PROBLEMS, PERMANENT WAVES.
To cut or not to cut? That was the question not so long ago, when women were first enjoy ing the freedom of short tresses.
Every one was doing it, some because they believed that short hair would make them look younger, sotne because it would be enior to care for, and some because | they believed that cutting would make the hair, come in thicker. If
at its best during the growing period. Many girls keep the back cut rather short, and let the front and sides grow out first. Then these may be drawn back over the short hair at the back, and held in place with small bob clamps, a hair net drawn loosely over all, or a bob comb.
Betwixt and Between. Magy women find that a per. a.girl wished a reason more powermanent wave helps them over the ful than the command of fashion, trying in-between period. With re- she had little trouble in finding it-gard to this, too, there are many
Now the question is,To grow or not to grow!"
Fashion's pendulum is swinging in the opposite direction, and hair of all length is now in fashion.
One of the hardest things about letting the hair grow is to make the decision to do it, and then to stick to it.
Just na you develop n sizeable length, along comes a party or a dance, and off comes the hair The process has to be hegun all over again, and the agony of the in- between stage is doubled.
The first thing to do in letting the hair grew is to decide ones and for all that you want long hair. Perhaps your friends, your family, or your sweet-hour will help you to decide.
Changed Colour.
After you hair has grown, you may be disappointed to find that you have not the same kind of hair which you cut off a few years ago. Repeated cuttings and the use of hot irons are likely to have made it coarser, stiffer, and less glossy.
Before you decide to let it grow, therefore, it is wise to consult & specialist to determine if the scalp needs any special treatment. It is easier to give it the needed treat ment while, the hair is growing in than when it is either long or abort. Having made certain that you want long hair, the next thing is to consider how to keep it looking
SOME NEW HATS.
PRINTED SILK MAKES SUMMER MILLINERY.
I saw, as usual, some delightful hate in the Dolly Vardon Hat Shop this week. Among them are a num- ber made of the same printed siika as we shall be wearing for our summer frocks, which would be particularly smart with one of the fashionable dresses of white silk strapped or trimmed with coloured or printed fabric. These little bats are, some of them, underlined in the brim with silk tagel straw, others have a band or an ornament of straw to trim them. Some of them are stitched all over, like the belts which you find on both heavy and light weight silk frocks, in others only the brim is stitched.
There are a number, too, of little shapes made of crocheted straw, which is particularly light and. pretty for summer use, especially with muslins or thin silks. Other light-weight straws are trimmed with a brim or band of angora felt, or alternatively, the felt may be trimmed with the straw. Orchid tones and mauves generally promise to be very fashionable this summer and I saw a number of charming hats in these colours made of fine silk tagel with a pretty pleating in the brim to make it fall softly round the face.
Ever since the irst agus of spring · hata have been pouring into the Dolly Vardon Hai Shop-gad pour- ing out. There can never have been a season with so great or charming a variety of shapes, straws, and colours, and it is very hard to say which is the most attractive. But! there can no excuse for the woman who can't find a hat to suit her this season, for every possible type has been considered.. It is really *almost wastes of time, to "describe here on Friday any of the hats I saw on Monday, since the one of which the description most plenses! you may be sold. But what is one among so many? If you will pay a visit you will find not one but many. many hate which you will want to. buy.
GILDED LEATHER.
Gilded leather is a decorative detail in the new millinery modes. This attractive fabric is put to many fascinating uses for the floral knot of flowers worn as a buttonhole, as well as in hat trimming. Artificial blossoms are made with one side of the petal in coloured leather, the reverse side of the petal being in gold or silver. This idea is parti cularly effective when the suede is coloured in the pastel tones, which are going to be worn in every phaso of dress this spring.
differing opinions Some people argue that the permanent wave muy cause the hair to break and split.
But, and this is important, they do not consider that it injures the roots of the air, the permanent wave affects only the hair which has already grown-
the permanent waving is done. Of course much depends on how Hair is as susceptable as any other part of the body to wrong treat- ment, and responds as willingly when correctly cared for. The per- manent waving must be undertaken

I al myself one of the lucky people whe have naturally curly hair so that I cannot speak from personal ex- perience. But, I have seen a num- ber of permanently wared, beads in the Colony and elsewhere, some which looked dull and with stiff unnaturat cunls, others which had all the gloss and softness of the natural wave. Among the latter but never among the former, are many whose wearers tell me that the work was done in the Darelle Beauty Shoppe. One friend of mine had her hair permanently waved there over twelve months ago and it still looks perfectly charming.

The following outline of his trip was made in an interview with she United Press:-
"I left São Salvador, Capital of the Brazilian state of Babin, March 15, 1927 and crossed the Orinoco river shortly afterwards. All this section of the trip took me through tropical forests and jungles, in- habited by Indians. Once in Veac zuela I was able to follow one of the modern highways into Caracas, where I arrived January 17, 1929. After visiting several other Vene- zuelan towns, I finally crossed the the Colombia-Yenezuela border into Cucuta. From there I proceeded to Bogota, following the highway which will eventually connect the Colombian and Venezuelan capitals.
