1929 FURNISHING FABRICS.

JACOBEAN DESIGNS ON LINEN, BEDROOM CRETONNES, LIZARD" FABRICS.

The dress designers have already let us into the secret of what we are to wear during the first ball of 1999 but the new dress fashiona for our homes have only just made their appearance. I had the first glimpan early this week in Whiteaway, Laid- law's when I saw the, big bolts of material being unpacked, making over 14 miles of furnishing fabrics. This comprises the finest selection of cretonnes, otes, which White away's have ever had at one time, and owing to the great success of those they had last year they are being offered at a very low prices.

Furnishing fabrics always seem

The cubist designs are amusing, and bose I saw were in pastel shades with a pink or beige general tone.

Coarse straw, varnished, and in two or three colour effects, is used for many of the smartest summer hats. Among those at which I was looking the other day in Pamela'a was one woven af red and white straw, about an eighth of an inch in width, which made quite distinct checks. A broad band of scarlet ciré ribbon, is the only trimming

There are some very nice, silk stockings now to be found in the Ladies' Department of LANE, CLAW FORD's which have arrived with the new shoes. Among the colours are Lido sand, Atmosphere, Wate: lily, which is a pale yellow, grey, and Grain, an excellent colour for day use being a warmish beige These atockings are at various prices from 82.75 a pair and are all beautifully' fine and well shaped.

GAY AS THE FLOWERS.

DELIGHTFUL COLLECTION OF SUMMER FROCKS.

Folly Vardon is a heroine who has lived and become real to many. people besides those who have read her love story. Her name has be come associated with certain types of frocks and hats, and is a synonym for dainty old world charm. Here in Hong Kong it has an ever, more direct significance, as Dolly Farder has been chosen as the patroness of a shop where you can always be sure of ånding millinery and dresses in which the little lady would have rejoiced no less than we do.

A collection of the most delightful frocks arrived this week. Some of them are waabing silk, others of cotton broad cloth and yat others of muslin. They might. perhaps, be roughly divided into those which are made on tho semi-picture lines which are often termed "Dolly Vardon and those made in semi- tailored styles. Both are most at- tractive and which you prefer de pends on your own taste. The de signs on all the fabrics are, for the most part, the small sprigged flower patterns which certainly claim the. first place this summer in the hearts of dress designers and wearers alike, but there are others of a more chintz-like nature, notably on the broadcloths, which are equally pleas ing.

Many of the little muslin frocks have "chus of clear organdie in' white or a pastel shades, sometimes they have cute little pockets of organdie as well, and generally a Each or bow of ribbon in one colour. of the design.,

These dresses are all very reason- ably priced and are in various sizes. They are selling so quickly that I advise you to go soon, although an- ther shipment is expected before Jong,

designs for printed georgettes are charming. They have most of them the old world in- spiration which is so marked in both pattern and line this season. Many of them seem to have been copied from Morris designs or from the sprigged muslins of an even earlier date. I saw over forty different patterns in the PIONEER. SILK, STORE this week, of which a description of two or three must suffice..

A light brown ground is starred with tiny plaats with pink Bowers: and green leaves, between them dart dragon flies of a uniform pale beige colour. On a white ground are small pale pink and pale bine flowers, and another white is print- ed with small leaves in pearl grey. A pretty squared design is carried out in cinnamon brown with a few lines of pale blue to lighten it.

There are also designs, for those who prefer them, of larger flowers in stronger colours.

This is altogether a most delight- ful collection and one which you

They consist of a sleeveless jumper and trousers in some plain colour, trim- med with bands of printed material or a little embroidery, and a three quarter length coat printed in some gay design. The coats have, geor gette sleeves and can be worn separately as evening coats. Some of them are printed in haari coat designs, others are of all over print- ed crêpe de chine bordered with a "plain colour. The idea is to sleep, in the jumper and trousers and unc the coat as a dressing jacket, or the whole, casemble may be used as a negligée.
