The Kwangtung Weights and Measures Bureau has been keeping a sharp eye on peddlers. On the 18th inst. the Bureau issued a notification that peddlers whose measures or weights have not been examined must submit them to the Bureau within a month or they will become liable to pegalties. The authorities hope to unify the measures and weights and put an end to & source of dishonest dealing.
The Silk Improvement Bureau is opening a branch office in Lok- chang to encourage the silk indus try in the Northern districts. Branch offices will also be establish- ed later at Chaochow, Muihsien, Skuitung, Tienpak and other places. The culture of mulberry trees and the rearing of silk worms in the Eastern and Southern dis- tricts are to be encouraged. The recent improvement in the silk business is having a stimulating effect upon merchants and pro- ducers and real efforts are being made to stage a revival of Kwang- tung's great silk industry of the past.
