$3,500,000 FOR NEW MACHINERY.

YESTERDAY'S ANNUAL MEETING.

The 40th ordinary annual meeting of shareholders of the "Green Island Cement Company, Ltd., was held at noon yesterday in St. George's Building. An extraordinary meeting was held immed iately after at which a resolution was passed authorising the Board to spend up to $3,500,000 on new plant for the Hok Un factory, Kow- joon.

Extraordinary Meeting.

The notice convening the extra- ordinary meeting was then read by the secretary, after which the chair- man said

Gentlemen, at the annual general meeting in March last year, I in- formed you that your Board were investigating the question of the installation of a new plant as Hok Un with a view to placing concrete proposals before you in due course and this meeting has been called for the purpose of asking you for your approval of this installation.

We have gone extremely carefully into the various aspects of the matter and in order to check our recommendations and those made by our own technical and executive staff, we requested Messrs. Love, Bingham & Matthews to draw up a report on the financial side of the undertaking. This report we are glad to say supports our own views and those of our technical staff, and is available to any shareholder on application to the secretary,

We think it will be inadvisable.

At the ordinary meeting a shareholder, Mr. Joseph Gould (the sharebroker) alleged discourtesy on the part of the staff toward a potential customer, and also suggested consideration of the ro- muneration to Messrs. Shewan, Tomes & Co., the General Managers.
