PERSIAN SOVEREIGNTY
DISPUTED.
BRITAIN'S 'OPPOSITION.
(THROUGH SKUTER'S AGENOT.)
LONDON, March 1st. Copies have been ciroulated to membora of the Lengue of Nations of Note which the British Minister la Teheran has handed to the Persian Government in meference the latter's claim to sovereignty over the island of Bahrein, in the Persian Gulf.
The British Note deals in detail with the contentions put forward by the Persian Government.
Trestles Recalled.
The Note also recalls that Britain first concluded a Treaty with the independent ruler of Bahrein is 1920, with the object of suppression of piracy and maintenance of pence in the Gulf.
The British Government sub- sequently concluded other Treaties with the Sheik of Bahrein as au independent ruler, and consistantly refused to admit Turkish, Persiao, had other claims to sovereignty over his dominions
The British Government during that time refused to accede to the Sheik's request that Bahrein should be incorporated in the British Dominions
British Assurances.
It was not until the Treaty of 1501 that for the Sheik's under 1981 that the British Government, taking to abstain from maritime
aggression, war and piracy, BASUL- ed him, in return, of their support against similar aggression, ner till 1880 and 1892 that they undertook anqualified liability for the foreign relations of that ruler, under which
he has now invoked their assistance ia repelling what he not unnaturale ly regards as a wholly unprovoked attempt on his independence by ä foreign Government."
