TRAMWAY SHARE SCRIP FORGERY.
TWO MEN CAUGHT IN POLICE TRAP.
́SHAREBROKER'S 'ASSISTANT AS INFORMER,
THE PLOT DISCLOSED.
A new form of activity by a gang of forgers who tried to pass a document purporting to be a share scrip of the Hong Kong Tramways, Limited, for 300 shares, was disclosed at the Central Magistracy yesterday, when the case against two Chinese arrested on January 18th was opened Dealings had been going on from January 8th and the date of arrest, between the gang and a sharebroker's assistant, who disclosed the plot to the police. The informer then worked on "instructions" and a bogus buyer was also brought in by the police to eapplete the transaction.

BOUGHT GIRLS,
"Young girls were for sale at. ridiculous prices, so the Salvation Army purchased one hundred at an auction sale at $10 each."
This astonishing statement was made to a Daily Press representa tive by Ensign J. Gilman, of the Peking Headquarters of the Salva tion Army, in the course of an interview yesterday. The Ensign was giving a resume of the Army's work in China and made reference to the terrible scenes in the North
following the floods of 1021.
As in the case of the big banknote forgery recently, a man who took a leading part in the plot, and may be described as the moving spirit, eluded the police and is still at large. When the first defendant and the witness entered the office, a bogus buyer was scated there. This meet- ing took place at 1.43 p.m., when Mr. Lopes would be away at tiña. Negotations for the deal proceeded and the purhase price of $10,250 was agreed upon, this representing 850.50 for 300 shares of 85 each, the market price on that day being 820.80 per share. The second defen- dant after being introduced to the bogus buyer produced from his pocket the scrip and transfer deed, placing them on the desk in the office and inviting inspection. The suposed buyer went through certain formalities such as producing his wallet and verifying the total. A signal was then given to Sergeant Whant, who entered and arrested the second deefndant. The first de fendant was simultaneously arrest- ed in the street.

It appeared that some time early in January. last this witness (Ho Sik Hung) was approached by one Chan Lo Yat, who said he had a friend who wanted to dispose of some Tramway shares. The witness was asked to do all he could to find a market for the shares. He promised to do so, and after subsequent interviews Chan Lo Yat told him that the shares were not genuine but for geries which, he thought could be placed on the market. "The Street Angel" among other laudatory effusions typical of
