Mr. Bridgeman will not be alone in his alleged belief in the advan- tage of training in sail. A great many senior naval officers. still hold the view that the time devoted to a spell of bygone seamanship is wel! spent, even although a very slender proportion of the experience gain- ed can be practically applied in a steam navy. Unquestionably life in a sailing vessel develops a youth physically and engenders the quali ties of initiative and resource in the highest degree. Down to the war the great steamship companies always gave preference to officers who had been trained in sail, and possibly would still do so if any existed. Down to that time the White Star Line and Messrs. Devitt and Moore maintained four-masted ships in the Australian trade prim arily to serve as training ships for cadets..
