My wife and I had been dining out, and returned to Inverness terrace last, night at 11.30," said Rear Admiral Hope. "My wife went upstairs before me and came down, and from what she told me I went upstairs myself. I opened the door of my bedroom and, found the two men inside. The light was on, and each of the men had. an electric torch. The room was ic great disorder.

"They Looked Sheeplah." "I know one of "the men as the 'porter at the hotel and the other as a waiter. Neither had any busi- ness in my bedroom at that hour of the night. SECRET FUEL TEST IN A LINER.

PULVERISED COAL FOR 11,000-TON SHIP.,

London, Dec. 7th:-The announce ment in the Sunday Expreas that a Cabinet committee has formulated a scheme for a scientific revival of the coal industry, gives special in terest to an experimental cruise of an 11,000-ton liner which has just taken place in conditions of con- siderable secrecy.

The Government scheme com- prises the formation of one great selling organisation for all the coal fielde, combined with a State guar. antee of capital for the development of various low-temperature car- bonisation systems.

Low-temperature carbonisation ex- tracts from coal its valuable by-pro- ducts-motor spirit, fuel oil, lub-" ricating oil, and gas, and leaves a residue which, although valuable as smokeless fuel, is in most cases gomewhat difficult to burn.
