CONTINUED INCREASE FOR CARGOES.
HEAVY THROUGH FREIGHTS.
The general cargo returns for the period ending at 9 a.m. yesterday showed very good totals. Imports were heavier than the previous day, and there was a good increase ip through freights. Seventeen ar- rivals and fifteen - departures' were shown of which five, arrivals and eight departures were British,
Fourteen vessels discharged 15,164 tons of general merobändisa for this port of which 440 tons were contri- Iruted by two British abipe. The two best returns were from the s.s. Bengkalis (Dutch) from Seattle and Los Angeles with 6,833 tons of general cargo; and the s.s. Daviken (Norwegian) from Singapore with 2,000 tona.

Nine vessels contributed to a total of 32,625 tons of cargo for through ports, of which 9,035 tops from four British vessels. The two heaviest carriers were Japanese ships. The Mito Maru which arrived from Dunkirk | and Singapore carried 7,549 tons of merchandise, and the ss. Delagos Alara from Singapore had 7,792

"FOR USE IN CANTON?
The No. 9 Fire Float was soľù to a Chinese concern by the name of Duk War Cheong, of this Colony for the sum of $7,750. The pur chase was made on Thursday after noon, and the float, was taken over
yesterday morning The Fire Float gare a demonstration of her powers to her present owners with a broadside of jets from her bones.
The owners have not yet decided what they are going to do with the Fire Flast, but "it will either be turned into a tow boat, or re sold to the Canton Government for service on the Canton River.

The Fire Brigade Department hope to replace the "No. 9" by
new and well equipped Are-float"MOREA' similar to the large one at present in service.
The No. 9 Fire Float is the "double funnel "' vessel, which was usually moored alongside the "Star Ferry Wharf at Hong Kong. She has a number of years' service to her credit and was the first vesiel of her kind owned by the Fire Brigade Department."

The tug boat Taikoo, of the Tai-TAKADA
|** TALAMBA" koo Dockyard & Engineering Co., sent yesterday morning in answer to a call of distress from the 8. Lyemoon, near Haiphong. The vessel had sustained dainage to her tail shaft and propeller which was necessitating a greatly reduced speed. The as. Lyemoon is owned by the Chinese Shipping Company, Messrs. Wo Fat Shing and is em ployed on the Saigon-Hong Kong run. The vessel left Hong Kong for Saigan on December 11th, and at the time of the mishap was return- ing with a cargo of rice.
We understand that the damage is slight and there is no cause for anxiety.
Firing Orackers Without & Permilk. The coxswain of the steam launch Taimeshan, owned by the Asiatic Petroleum Company was summoned before Commander J. B. Newill, D.S.O., R., at the Marine Court yesterday morning for firing crack- ers from his launch in the Harbour without written permit. The de- fendant pleaded guilty. A repre- sentative from the A.P.C., inform- ed the Magistrate that the crackers were fired with the knowledge of the Company on the departure of member of the staff for Home, and asked for leniency as it was only a technical breach of the regulations.
The Magistrate recorded a convic tion but discharged the defendant
