LONDON ZOO ACQUISI- TIONS.

CIFTS FROM MALAYA.

The executors of the late Mr. Reginald Farrar, of Singapore. have presented to the Zoologica! Society, through Mr. Boden Kloss, a male Malay tapir, which has ar rived safely in the Gardens. The Society has now the good fortune to own three Malay capirs and one American tapir. The distribution of the tapirs is one of the most remarkable features of animal geography. They are found only in Central America and the Malay Archipelago. The American ani- mals are self-coloured except for a line of white round the margin of the eara. The Asiatic tapies have a great saddle-shaped patch of white across the flanks. In general `structure, skeleton and habits the

two are extremely similar, and the" young of both, have the dark cout with horizontal white marked stripes.

His questions to the Beard. were:-

:

With a view to minimising the danger of polluting the Yau- mati Typhoon Shelter, is there any good reason why the garbage chute should not be removed from its present position at the bottom of Saigon Street to a point, out- side the Shelter, to the North of it where the motor refuse lorries can discharge their loads into the Sanitary De- partment barges?

իլ

. Will the Government con- sider the advisability of such removal at an early date ? Will the Government cause investigations to be made into the success or otherwise of -existing incinerators in large industrial establishments in the Colony for the destruc- tion of refuse with a view to its adoption by the Govern- ment?"

The Board's Views.

In his reply. Mr. G. R. Sayer, President of the Sanitary Board. said :—

(1) The Saigon Street dust sta- tion is excellently situated for our existing system of refuse removal,, and the danger of pollutiga can be disregarded. (3) It ia nos proposed to remove

this station.

(3) I am not aware that any large industrial establishment in the Colony employs incinerators on any considerable "Renle for the destruction of refuse, but if the member will give me names and addresses, I shall be glad to investigate.. Mr. Braga: Will you please see the Kowloon Docks.

WASHINGTON, Friends of the late President Wilson are angry at the publication of Dr. Nowak's book on the signing of the Peace Treaty, in which he bitterly attacks the late President.
