Dr. Iredell, once his patient was safe in the care of the sister aud a nurse, returned to the burning room, and threw buckets of sand and water on the flames.

All the apparatus in the room was destroyed. Three diathermy lamps, each worth about £70, were burned, and the patient's clothing was destroyed.

FORGERY FOR THE BRITISH MUSEUM.

Among the distinguished artists and architects put forward for the presidency are

Sir Reginald Blomfield, R.Å. Sir William Orpen, R.A. Sir Edwin Lutyens, R.A. Sir William Llewellyn, R.A. Sir John Lavery, R. Mr. Richard Jack, R.A.

Mrs. Laura Knight, A.R.A. Each one of these candidates has a particular section of adherents.

Youth And Age. The Daily Express Art Critic, discussing the pros and cons of the election, writes as follows:-

The opposing forces are the ranks of youth against the ranks of age. There is a strong feeling in the Academy as a whole-including the academicians and the "associat in favour of a president who would br sympathetic to the twentieth cen- tury art of the younger generation to which Sir Frank Dicksee was openly and professedly opposed.

The older academicians, however, regard the post essentially as the reward of long service to the Royal Academy itself, and they will not consider any artist much under seventy.

When the fight began the favoured candidate of the older academicians was Sir Reginald Blomfield, the architect, designer of the Menin Gate, who is seventy-two and who would thus have not more than three years of office before reaching the retiring age. The younger men favoured Sir William Orpen, who ia filty, and in close touch with modern life in many forms.
