THRILLS AND SPILLS AT KWANTI STEEPLECHASE

MEETING.

Before a large gathering of the Colony's leading followers of the Turf, the Fanling Hunt presented one of the most thrilling meeting's since its inception,

There were many spills one of which appeared to have very consequencies. Mr. W. T. Stanton who was riding Sir Hundred came a cropper at the last fence just before the run home in the Heavy-weight Stakes. It appears that Mr. Stanton (whose pozy was running very well though tired) was "just about to make his finishing run when his mount jumped short and breasted the hurdle which made him topple badly, unseating Mr. Stanton who " "landed heavily on the side of his face, and was unconcious for fully Ave minutes. After Dr. Margown had examined the unlucky rider he was removed to his country house where he received a thorough examination at the hands of several Doctors who were present at the meeting. Enquiries to-day elicited the fact that although badly shaken Mr, Stanton is not seriously hurt and will be able to attend to his business to-day:

Mr. T.-C. T. Beek who arrived at the jockey's room some time after the race was finished looked as if he had been dropped from an aeroplane. It appears he had an argument with one of the big post and rail fences which act as a guide to the hurdles and the fence won, for Beck walked back..

MR. GILBERT HARRIMAN'S SUCCESS.

Mr. Gilbert Harriman was the star turn of race number three she was off again, on again, gone again," a least three times, during the race. But Gilbert is a stout fellow and he gave the onlookers a display of real do ar die steeplechase riding.

The Band of the 1st Bath. the Queen's Royal Regt, under the baton of Bandmaster H." Perry, A.R.C.M., played a number of musical selections during the intervals between races.

Heavyweight Stakes. Dumbell got the best of the start and made the pace "a corker" with Sta Hundred close up. Sole taire was lying very handy despite the fact that he was carrying 200 pounds and had already been out

in the first rase. Blotting Paper was lying at the tail of the first field and James Pigg was plodding, along in the rear. Dumbell was still in command when half the distance had been covered but Durham was gradually overhauling him. At the bead James Pigg was pushed through the field and tura- ing into the straight he was in the lead with the rest of the field lying handy Stanton crashed at the last jumps just 3 he was striving to get on terms with the leaders. James Pigg went on to win with Dumbell second and Durham third. The winner paid the biggest dividend of the meeting $81.30.
